Lucasfilm Burying Rey Skywalker? New ‘Star Wars’ Movie May Start Filming “This Fall”

Lucasfilm seems to be in hyperspace limbo when it comes to theatrical releases, despite an ever-growing lineup of announced projects. It’s been over five years since a Star Wars film hit the big screen, and by the time the next one arrives, fans will have waited nearly seven years.

Following Disney’s divisive sequel trilogy, Lucasfilm has shifted its focus to the small screen. Since The Mandalorian debuted in 2019, Disney+ has become the central hub for Star Wars storytelling, with series like The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew expanding the New Republic era. Meanwhile, shows like Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and The Bad Batch delve into other corners of the galaxy.

But now, Jon Favreau is bringing Din Djarin and Grogu to theaters. The feature-length Mandalorian movie is set to debut on May 22, 2026, potentially replacing Season 4 of the hit series, though Lucasfilm hasn’t confirmed this yet. True to form, plans remain ever-fluid.

Initially, a second Star Wars film was planned for December 2026, with rumors pointing to Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey Skywalker project. However, Disney has swapped that slot for Ice Age 6 under 20th Century Studios. For now, The Mandalorian and Grogu movie is the only confirmed Star Wars project with a release date.

As uncertainty swirls, new reports hint at other films in development. Insider Daniel Richtman recently claimed that Taika Waititi’s untitled Star Wars project has been shelved, while Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron is reportedly back on the radar.

Meanwhile, Shawn Levy, known for his work on Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), is still developing a Star Wars film alongside The Adam Project writer Jonathan Tropper. In an IndieWire interview, Levy shared: “There’s a Star Wars movie that I’m developing. You never know what’s going to become undeniable and get made next.”

According to scooper @MyTimeToShineH, Levy’s project is “moving fast” and has already attracted A-list talent. While the specifics remain under wraps, another report suggests production could start as soon as this fall in the UK.

Comic Book Movie reported: “[A]ccording to insider Daniel Richtman, it may start shooting as early as this Fall in the UK. He also reveals that it was originally going to feature Daisy Ridley as an older Rey Skywalker.”

Late last year, sources claimed Ridley’s Rey—last seen adopting the Skywalker name in Star Wars: Episode IX–The Rise of Skywalker (2019)—is considered the franchise’s most valuable cinematic asset. While this is debatable given the rise of the Mando-Verse, it’s not the first time a Rey-centric film has been in development.

Obaid-Chinoy’s current project aims to explore Rey’s creation of a new Jedi Order. Previously, Damon Lindelof was attached to a Star Wars film focusing on a timeline 60 years after The Rise of Skywalker, with reports suggesting an older Rey could’ve been played by Academy Award winner Helen Mirren.

Beyond these projects, Lucasfilm’s plate remains full. James Mangold is developing a film set 25,000 years before anything seen in Star Wars, exploring the origins of the Force in a “Dawn of the Jedi” tale. Meanwhile, Dave Filoni’s highly anticipated movie will bring the New Republic era to life, potentially adapting Timothy Zahn’s “Heir to the Empire” storyline.

Adding to the buzz, Simon Kinberg is crafting a new Star Wars trilogy that could move beyond the Skywalker Saga entirely, possibly setting the stage for Episodes X through XII. If true, this series might overshadow Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey-centered film.

With so many projects in various stages of development, it’s clear that Lucasfilm’s galaxy is still expanding. Whether these ambitious ventures will soar to success or crash and burn remains uncertain, but one thing is certain: the Star Wars saga is far from over.
