Lucasfilm Recasts Luke Skywalker for Disney+, Mark Hamill Steps Aside After 49 Years

Luke Skywalker is officially returning to Disney+ on September 2, but one major part of the legendary Jedi’s comeback will be different this time.

For nearly five decades, Mark Hamill has remained closely tied to the character he first introduced to audiences in Star Wars (1977). Even decades later, Lucasfilm has continued finding ways to bring Hamill back as Luke.

This upcoming appearance breaks from that pattern.

Disney+ viewers will once again see Luke dressed in black, wielding his green lightsaber, and stepping into one of his biggest modern Star Wars moments. However, Hamill won’t be the performer bringing him to life.

Luke Skywalker Returns to Disney+ September 2

Luke will appear in LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, an animated Disney+ special scheduled to begin streaming September 2.

The project revisits memorable events from The Mandalorian, bringing back Din Djarin, Grogu, Moff Gideon, Dark Troopers, and other familiar characters.

That also means returning to Luke’s surprise arrival during the Season 2 finale.

Disney saves the Jedi’s appearance for the end of the trailer. Luke arrives wearing black and carrying his green lightsaber before fighting his way through the Dark Troopers.

It’s immediately recognizable to anyone who watched the original sequence in 2020.

This time, though, the voice behind Luke has changed.

Mark Hamill Isn’t Playing Luke This Time

Hamill’s absence doesn’t mean Lucasfilm has permanently removed him from the role.

Other performers have voiced Luke in animated projects and video games before, so the character hasn’t exclusively belonged to Hamill across every Star Wars production.

Still, this particular recasting stands out.

Hamill’s history with Luke reaches back 49 years to Star Wars (1977). More recently, he returned to voice a LEGO version of Luke in LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy (2024).

Hamill was also involved when The Mandalorian brought a younger Luke into live action.

For that appearance, Lucasfilm combined visual effects with a body double to recreate the younger Jedi while Hamill remained involved in Luke’s return.

For LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, Eric Bauza will voice the character instead.

That doesn’t make Bauza Luke’s permanent new performer. Lucasfilm hasn’t announced that Hamill can never return to the role again.

For this Disney+ release, however, Luke is moving forward without Hamill.

One of The Mandalorian’s Biggest Scenes Returns

Luke originally appeared in The Mandalorian when Din Djarin and his allies desperately needed help.

The group found itself trapped aboard Moff Gideon’s ship as Dark Troopers closed in. They weren’t prepared to overcome the threat on their own.

Then an X-wing arrived.

Luke tore through the Dark Troopers before finally revealing himself to Din, Grogu, and the rest of the group. He had sensed Grogu reaching out through the Force and arrived to take him for Jedi training.

The new version recreates that basic sequence while giving it a much lighter personality.

After Luke reveals his identity, Din and Bo-Katan don’t immediately recognize him. Luke responds by reminding them that he’s “kind of a big deal.”

It’s the kind of comedy that separates this version from the much more serious original scene.

Luke Will Still Look Like Fans Remember

Despite the different performer, Luke’s appearance remains familiar.

The character wears black and carries the green lightsaber associated with his years after Return of the Jedi (1983).

This isn’t the older Jedi Master audiences eventually encounter during the sequel trilogy, either.

The Mandalorian takes place several years after Return of the Jedi (1983), placing Luke relatively close to the version audiences watched confront Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine.

Animation also makes it much simpler to present a younger Luke.

Rather than using live-action effects to recreate Hamill’s younger appearance, the special can present Luke exactly as the story requires.

September 2 Will Be a Big Mandalorian Day

Luke’s return arrives alongside another major Disney+ release.

Din Djarin and Grogu appeared across three seasons of The Mandalorian before moving to theaters with The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026).

Now, that movie is heading to streaming.

The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026) and LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian are both scheduled to arrive on Disney+ on September 2.

That gives subscribers two different ways to revisit Din and Grogu on the same day.

It also puts Luke Skywalker back on Disney+ without the performer most closely associated with him.

Lucasfilm hasn’t established a permanent replacement for Hamill or closed the door on another return.

But when Luke ignites that familiar green lightsaber again on September 2, someone else will be behind the legendary Jedi.
