Lucasfilm Finds Its Next ‘Star Wars’ Leads To Replace Din Djarin and Grogu

After years of dominating the modern Star Wars landscape, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu’s future appears increasingly uncertain as Lucasfilm turns its attention toward a new generation of characters.

The two characters, first introduced in The Mandalorian (2019), quickly became one of the franchise’s most popular duos, driving the success of Disney+’s early Star Wars expansion and spawning multiple spin-offs across the “Mando-Verse.”

However, recent developments suggest the franchise may now be shifting direction.

Din Djarin and Grogu Are Being Replaced

This year’s theatrical continuation The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026) brought the characters to the big screen for the first time, but a muted box office and mixed reception have raised questions about the long-term trajectory of the series.

Meanwhile, Lucasfilm is preparing the next theatrical release, Star Wars: Starfighter (2027), a standalone film directed by Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) a and starring Ryan Gosling (Project Hail Mary) and Flynn Gray.

Set five years after The Rise of Skywalker (2019), the project will introduce a new central pairing reportedly built around a pilot and a Force-sensitive companion — a structure reminiscent of Din and Grogu’s dynamic.

Recently, Deadline reported that footage from the film had been shown at CineEurope. No details about what was seen have been shared, although reports with plot and character specifics are now emerging online. However, Lucasfilm has yet to verify these details.

Star Wars: Starfighter Will Launch a New Era

While Lucasfilm has not confirmed any direct connection between the two duos, the timing of Starfighter has fueled speculation that the franchise may be preparing to move away from its Mandalorian-era focus.

The “Mando-Verse,” which includes The Book of Boba Fett (2021), Ahsoka (2023), Skeleton Crew (2024), and three seasons of the flagship series, has expanded significantly in recent years, but its momentum has become increasingly uneven.

With Starfighter set for release in 2027, attention is now turning to whether this new pairing could represent the next phase of Star Wars’ theatrical future.

Star Wars: Starfighter releases in theaters on May 28, 2027.

The film also stars Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.
