‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Gets Surprise Prequel as Lucasfilm Bets Bigger on ‘Star Wars’ Franchise
Grogu’s story isn’t slowing down.
Lucasfilm has spent the past few years relying on Din Djarin and his Force-sensitive companion to anchor its Disney+ strategy. Even as the wider Star Wars franchise has faced mixed reactions across film and television, the pair have remained among its most recognizable characters.
The duo first debuted in 2019 with The Mandalorian, a series that helped launch Disney+. What began as a relatively self-contained adventure quickly evolved into the centerpiece of a growing interconnected universe spanning multiple shows and characters.

That expansion recently reached the big screen with The Mandalorian and Grogu, Lucasfilm’s first theatrical Star Wars release since 2019.
The film continued Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu’s journey after the events of Disney+’s streaming series. Positioned as a major test of the franchise’s theatrical future, it arrived with significant expectations from both fans and Disney executives.
Its box office performance, however, has sparked debate among fans and industry observers.
Although the movie generated strong interest from dedicated Star Wars audiences, it struggled to reach the heights associated with previous theatrical entries in the franchise. The result has led to questions about Lucasfilm’s long-term strategy as it balances streaming and theatrical storytelling.

Those concerns have not stopped the company from investing further in Din Djarin and Grogu.
Lucasfilm Expands the Story Beyond the Screen
Mad Cave Studios and Papercutz, in collaboration with Lucasfilm Publishing, are preparing to release Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu ā Danger in the Dark.
The project is being described as āthe first-ever original comic one-shot starring The Mandalorian duo Din Djarin and Grogu,ā marking a notable milestone for the characters outside of television and film.
Rather than adapting an existing story, the comic introduces a new adventure set before the events of the movie.

According to the official synopsis, Din Djarin and Grogu receive a distress call from an isolated world and travel to investigate. What begins as a routine mission quickly develops into a dangerous encounter involving a mysterious threat hidden beneath the planet’s surface.
The story is written by Steve Orlando, with artwork from Alessandro Santoro and colors by Fabi Marques.
Lucasfilm Publishing has increasingly used comics and novels to fill gaps between major Star Wars projects. Characters including Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, and Doctor Aphra have all received expanded stories through publishing initiatives over the last decade.
Now Din Djarin and Grogu are receiving similar treatment.
Why the New ‘Star Wars’ Release Matters
The timing is perhaps the most interesting part of the announcement.
Instead of scaling back following questions surrounding the franchise’s theatrical performance, Lucasfilm appears to be broadening the reach of its most successful modern characters.

Publishing projects often serve as a testing ground for future storytelling directions. They also help keep fan-favorite characters active between larger releases.
Grogu remains one of Disney’s most marketable Star Wars creations, generating significant merchandise sales and maintaining popularity with casual audiences years after his debut.
Din Djarin has similarly become one of the franchise’s defining modern heroes, helping introduce a new generation of viewers to Star Wars.
