‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Trailer Confirms Mutant Dino Inspired by ‘Star Wars’ Rancor and ‘Alien’s Xenomorph

As anticipation builds for Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), Universal Pictures has pulled back the curtain on one of the film’s biggest secrets. A recent Vanity Fair exclusive has confirmed that this installment will introduce a mutated dinosaur, marking one of the boldest departures in franchise history.

The Jurassic World trilogy pushed the limits of dinosaur engineering with the Indominus rex and Indoraptor, but this time, things have taken an even darker turn. According to the article, the film explores the aftermath of failed genetic experiments, revealing an entire class of creatures that never should have existed in the first place.

Unlike previous films that focused on the dangers of corporate greed and scientific overreach, Jurassic World Rebirth leans into the unknown consequences of InGen’s earliest, most secretive research. The film’s characters, led by Scarlett Johansson’s covert operations expert Zora Bennett, find themselves on an isolated island where some of these experiments have survived.

Producer Frank Marshall shed some light on these creatures, describing them as “the dinosaurs that didn’t work.” While they are rooted in real prehistoric biology, their genetic makeup includes terrifying mutations that give them an unnatural appearance.

Concept art has been circulating online for weeks, depicting a nightmarish new species, and the exclusive confirms that a mutated creature along these lines will indeed appear in the first official trailer later today (February 5).

Director Gareth Edwards discussed its design, revealing that its influences include classic cinematic monsters, drawing inspiration from Star Wars’ Rancor, Alien’s Xenomorph, and, of course, the Tyrannosaurus Rex itself.

The film is set five years after Jurassic World Dominion, during which Earth’s ecosystem has struggled to adapt to free-roaming dinosaurs. Most species have been forced into equatorial zones where their prehistoric environments are somewhat replicated.

However, the story takes a dramatic turn when Johansson’s character leads a covert team to retrieve genetic material from three massive dinosaurs—only to stumble upon something far more sinister.

The team’s encounter with a shipwrecked family on the island sets off a chain of events that leads to what Universal has teased as a “sinister, shocking discovery”—a phrase that, until now, has been shrouded in mystery. Thanks to this latest reveal, audiences now have a better understanding of what that phrase truly means.

With the first trailer expected later today, all eyes are on Jurassic World Rebirth to see just how far it will push the franchise’s scientific horror elements.

Universal Pictures has set a July 2, 2025 release date for the film, which stars Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Luna Blaise, David Iacono, Audrina Miranda, Philippine Velge, Bechir Sylvain, and Ed Skrein.
