Few franchises juggle family-friendly thrills and genuine scares like Jurassic Park. The original 1993 film set a high bar with its blend of awe and terror, while its sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), kept the suspense alive. However, as the series evolved, its edge dulled, culminating in the more family-friendly tone of Jurassic World Dominion. Now, Gareth Edwards promises to reinvigorate the series with Jurassic World Rebirth.

Edwards, known for his gritty, suspenseful work on Godzilla (2014), described Rebirth as an “action horror” during a recent interview with Empire Magazine. Drawing inspiration from Spielberg’s less-is-more approach to terror, Edwards said the film contains “tense, fun action moments” and “games with the audience” that will keep viewers on edge.

Edwards believes dinosaurs’ primal appeal is rooted in reality. “You can’t dismiss them as a threat,” he explained. “We’re mammals with millions of years of instinct that tells us some giant creature is going to chase us and try to kill us.” It’s this raw, evolutionary fear that Rebirth aims to tap into.

The plot centers on Scarlett Johansson’s covert specialist Zora Bennett and her team being tasked with securing DNA from three massive dinosaurs on an unspecified island. With the rating likely to remain PG-13, Edwards is expected to strike a balance between family-friendly fun and spine-chilling suspense, much like the iconic raptor kitchen scene from the original film.
