Universal Pictures is gearing up for the next chapter in its blockbuster Jurassic series with Jurassic World Rebirth, set to release on July 2, 2025.
Directed by Gareth Edwards (2014’s Godzilla) and written by Jurassic Park veteran David Koepp, the film is already generating buzz. Featuring a cast led by Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey, Rebirth is set five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion and promises a game-changing twist that could redefine the franchise.
The film follows Johansson’s character, Zora Bennett, as she leads a team tasked with retrieving DNA from three dinosaurs. Their mission, rooted in efforts to advance medical breakthroughs, takes an unexpected turn when the group stumbles upon a hidden island harboring a “sinister, shocking discovery that’s been hidden from the world for decades.”
This cryptic line from the film’s synopsis has naturally invited speculation, and while there has been no official hint about what this twist could entail, one particularly bold idea stands out—our own speculation that time travel could be the key.
This theory isn’t grounded in existing fan discussions or franchise lore but rather stems from the open-ended nature of the synopsis. What if InGen, the company long credited with pioneering dinosaur cloning, wasn’t responsible for the creation of the dinosaurs after all? What if the truth is that they discovered a way to travel back in time and bring dinosaurs to the present?

The idea may seem incredibly far-fetched, but it would undeniably fit the description of “sinister” and “shocking.” Such a twist, however, would completely reframe the entire franchise.
Imagine a scenario where InGen’s public image as scientific innovators was a carefully constructed lie. Instead of “playing God” with DNA, they could have been raiding the prehistoric past, taking living dinosaurs from their natural habitats and transplanting them into a world that was never meant to sustain them. This revelation would not only align with the series’ ongoing themes of corporate greed and ethical dilemmas but also introduce a fresh layer of complexity to the narrative.
Adding to this speculation is the involvement of David Koepp, whose writing credits include the 2023 film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which introduced time travel into the Indiana Jones universe. If Koepp saw time travel as a compelling tool in Indiana Jones, it’s not entirely unreasonable to imagine him revisiting the concept for Jurassic World Rebirth.
Whatever the “shocking” twist may be, Jurassic World Rebirth is positioning itself as a bold entry in the franchise, one that could challenge long-held assumptions about its core mythology. Whether it’s time travel or something entirely unexpected, the revelation promises to leave a lasting impact on the series.
Fans won’t have to wait too long to uncover the truth. Jurassic World Rebirth hits theaters worldwide on July 2, 2025.
