‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Teases “Shocking” Twist That Could Divide Fans

The Jurassic Park franchise has always explored the boundaries of genetic engineering, crafting awe-inspiring and terrifying stories centered on dinosaurs. From the original 1993 blockbuster to the Jurassic World trilogy, the series has seen its fair share of evolution. Now, with the upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), the seventh entry in the franchise, fans can expect a return to the tone and realism that made the original film so iconic.

In recent entries like Jurassic World (2015) and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), genetically modified dinosaurs like the Indominus Rex and Indoraptor dominated the storylines. While these hybrid creations brought novelty, they also drew criticism for straying too far from the grounded, naturalistic tone of the original trilogy.

Director Gareth Edwards, known for Godzilla (2014), is seemingly aiming to correct this course in Jurassic World Rebirth. In an interview with Empire Magazine, Edwards shared his vision: “There’s something kind of mythical about dinosaurs, yet real, you know? The fact that they really did exist means you can’t dismiss them as a threat. When other films try to scare you, you can fob them off and say, ‘Well, there’s no such thing as monsters.’ But there’s something very primal about dinosaurs, because we’re mammals with millions of years of embedded instinct that tells us some giant creature at some point is going to chase us and try and kill us. So it feels instantly relatable.”

Edwards’ comments heavily imply that the new film will focus on more authentic dinosaurs

The official synopsis for Jurassic World Rebirth teases a “sinister, shocking discovery hidden from the world for decades.” Set five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion (2022), the story follows covert operations expert Zora Bennett, played by Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Endgame). Bennett’s mission is to secure DNA from the world’s three largest dinosaurs, but her team’s encounter with a stranded civilian family changes everything. The group becomes trapped on an island where they stumble upon the franchise’s most shocking revelation yet.

While Universal Pictures has kept the details of this twist tightly under wraps, speculation runs rampant among fans. Some theories suggest the introduction of dinosaur-human hybrids—a concept teased but never fully explored in the series. However, the twist may involve human cloning, as it introduced in Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom (2018), but this time, potentially bringing back iconic characters like John Hammond, founder of InGen, who was played by the late Richard Attenborough.

The possibility of Hammond’s return is unknown, however, Fallen Kingdom introduced human cloning with Maisie Lockwood, a character whose existence divided fans. Revisiting the concept to resurrect Hammond could align with the franchise’s themes of tampering with nature, but it also risks overcomplicating the story.

If Hammond does make an appearance, filmmakers could use CGI and deepfake technology to re-create Attenborough’s likeness, as seen in recent films like Rogue One (also directed by Gareth Edwards) and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (also written by David Koepp, who has returned to pen the screenplay for Jurassic World Rebirth). Alternatively, a younger actor could portray a cloned version of the character.

Beyond its compelling premise, Jurassic World Rebirth boasts an impressive ensemble cast. Scarlett Johansson leads a lineup that includes Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton), Mahershala Ali (Green Book), Rupert Friend (Obi-Wan Kenobi), and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer).

With Edwards’ talent for atmospheric storytelling and Koepp’s knack for suspenseful, character-driven narratives, Rebirth could become the franchise’s most grounded installment in decades.

With release set for July 2, 2025, Jurassic World Rebirth aims to win back fans who felt alienated by the recent entries. Whether it succeeds in balancing nostalgia with innovation remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the Jurassic franchise is ready to roar again.
