49 Years After ‘Darth Vader’ Debut, Hayden Christensen Reportedly Returning for Solo Film

Few Star Wars characters have spent as much time in the spotlight as Darth Vader / Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen). Yet after 49 years, there is still one thing audiences have never received: a theatrical movie devoted entirely to Vader.

A new rumor claims that it could eventually change.

Christensen has already returned to the franchise after years away, and another appearance is officially on the calendar. Now, online chatter claims Disney and Lucasfilm may want to keep him around for even longer, potentially giving Vader his own movie in the process.

There are plenty of reasons to remain skeptical. Lucasfilm hasn’t confirmed the movie, and the original source behind the claim isn’t enough to establish that a project is actually moving forward. Still, with a huge year for Star Wars approaching, the rumor has quickly given Vader fans something new to discuss.

The New Vader Claim Comes With a Big Warning

The rumor suggests Christensen could be close to reaching a multi-project agreement with Disney and Lucasfilm.

A standalone Darth Vader movie is reportedly among the possibilities included in those plans.

However, the information didn’t originate with Lucasfilm or a major entertainment publication. It first appeared on a Star Wars fan page on Facebook before spreading across social media.

Star Wars Theory, which has more than 3 million subscribers on YouTube, later discussed the possibility, helping bring additional attention to the claim.

That doesn’t change its current status.

Numerous outlets have since reported on and discussed the potential project, adding to speculation about Christensen’s Star Wars future.

Unless stronger information emerges, this remains strictly a rumor.

Vader’s Early Years Could Provide the Setting

While the movie itself remains uncertain, the rumor offers a sense of when the story could unfold.

The reported project would take place sometime between Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005) and Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977).

That leaves a substantial period of Vader’s life available for a movie to explore.

Anakin’s life changes dramatically at the end of Revenge of the Sith (2005). After turning to the dark side, he suffers devastating injuries during his confrontation on Mustafar and ultimately becomes the armored Vader audiences recognize.

A movie could pick up in his early years, as he adjusts to that existence.

The story could also follow Vader as he serves Emperor Palpatine / Darth Sidious (Ian McDiarmid) and tracks down Jedi who escaped Order 66.

Other corners of Star Wars have explored this period, but putting Christensen at the center of a feature film would offer a different approach.

More importantly, the actor has already indicated that he’d welcome the opportunity.

Hayden Christensen Wants to Keep Exploring Vader

Christensen’s return in Obi-Wan Kenobi in 2022 brought him back to the role of Anakin and Vader.

During an interview with ET Canada that year, Christensen expressed interest in continuing with the character. He said there was more of Vader to explore and showed enthusiasm about the possibility of leading a spinoff.

Four years later, Christensen’s Star Wars run is continuing.

He will appear as Anakin in Season 2 of Ahsoka, which is expected to reach Disney+ on January 20, 2027.

There could potentially be even more appearances beyond that.

Separate rumors attributed to insider Daniel Richtman claim Christensen could appear in at least two additional Star Wars projects following Ahsoka Season 2. Lucasfilm hasn’t announced those projects, so those claims remain unconfirmed as well.

Still, the timing of all these rumors is notable.

Star Wars Has a Milestone Year Ahead

Star Wars turns 50 in 2027.

The franchise began its theatrical journey in 1977, and Lucasfilm already has several major events scheduled around next year’s anniversary.

A New Hope (1977) will head back to theaters in February. A few months later, Star Wars: Starfighter (2027) is scheduled to arrive on May 28.

There is also Star Wars Celebration in Los Angeles, running April 1 through April 4, 2027.

Christensen is scheduled to attend alongside Ian McDiarmid and Anthony Daniels.

Nothing indicates that Lucasfilm will use Celebration to announce a Darth Vader movie. However, with Christensen already attending during the franchise’s 50th-anniversary year, fans will naturally watch for any news about his future.

A Solo Movie Could Show a Different Side of Vader

If a standalone movie ever happens, Vader’s internal struggles could provide as much material as his battles.

His anger, physical limitations, regrets, and complicated relationship with Palpatine could help connect the shattered Anakin at the end of Revenge of the Sith (2005) with the imposing Vader seen in A New Hope (1977).

For now, that potential story exists only as a possibility.

Lucasfilm hasn’t announced a Vader movie. There is no confirmed director, release date, production schedule, or official plot.

What fans do know is that Christensen is still part of Star Wars, he has another confirmed appearance coming, and he has publicly expressed interest in continuing Vader’s story.

After 49 years of Darth Vader on the big screen, the question now is whether Lucasfilm will eventually decide that one of Star Wars’ most famous characters is ready to carry a movie entirely on his own.
