Johnny Depp Congratulates His “Dear Friend” Robert Downey Jr. On His First-Ever Oscar Win
Actor Johnny Depp reportedly has very definite feelings about actor Robert Downey Jr.’s Oscars win on Sunday evening, and Depp made sure to let him know about them.
The 96th Academy Awards
On Sunday evening, most of Hollywood turned out for the 96th Academy Awards, an annual ceremony that honors excellence in achievements at the cinema among some of the past year’s most talked-about films.
The star-studded event was held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles and was hosted for the fourth time by late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel.
The Evening’s Big Winners
Among the lead acting categories for the Academy Award, actress Emma Stone took home the title of Best Actress for her role in the film Poor Things, while actor Cillian Murphy won the Best Actor award for his role as J. Robert Oppenheimer in the 2023 blockbuster, Oppenheimer.
But the wins for the 2023 blockbuster film didn’t stop there.
Oppenheimer, produced by Universal Pictures, tells the story of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who was appointed to work on the top-secret Manhattan Project during World War II by Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves, Jr. The film follows Oppenheimer, played by actor Cillian Murphy, as he and his team of scientists spend years on the development and design of the atomic bomb.
‘Oppenheimer’
Oppenheimer emerged as the clear winner for the evening, garnering 13 total Oscar nominations and winning seven Academy Awards, including the coveted Best Picture Award, as well as Best Director, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Film Editing.
The film also won Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr.’s role as Lewis Strauss, a vengeful bureaucrat and the former chairman of the United States Atomic Energy Commission who led a covert campaign to remove Oppenheimer’s security clearance by labeling him a Communist.
Robert Downey Jr.’s Big Win
It was the first Oscars win of Downey Jr.’s career, and his friend and colleague, actor Johnny Depp, quickly took to Instagram to congratulate Downey Jr.
In his Instagram Story, Depp shared two photos of himself with Robert Downey Jr at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards with a caption that read, “Let’s try this again . . . congrats to my dear friend!”
Downey Jr., 58, and Depp, 60, have never appeared in a film together, but they have long been Hollywood mainstays. Both started their acting careers in the 1980s and quickly grew to become two of the most sought-after actors in the business.
Johnny Depp once said that he and Robert Downey Jr. had “known each other for a million years” during an interview as he talked about the love his son, Jack Depp, has for Downey Jr. as Iron Man in the Marvel Avengers films.
Say what you will about Johnny Depp–there’s still no denying that is revered as one of the most kind and humble actors to ever rise to Hollywood fame. Depp’s extension of congratulations to his friend is just one more example of Depp’s kindness in action.
