On the evening of Sunday, March 10, viewers tuned in to watch the 96th Annual Academy Awards. The show was once again hosted by beloved ABC late-night talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel. The night was full of memorable moments, including a naked John Cena, Ryan Gosling’s incredible performance of “I’m Just Ken”, Jimmy Kimmel reading a Donald Trump tweet, and Searchlight Pictures’ Poor Things surprising everyone with four Oscar wins.

However, it is one Marvel star that has people talking. And they are not impressed with his behavior.

That night, Robert Downey Jr. won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer. The award was presented by five past winners — Brendan Fraser, Christoph Waltz, Mahershala Ali, Tim Robbins, Christoph Waltz, and Ke Huy Quan. Ke Huay Quan — who won the award last year — excitedly announced Downey’s name.

When Downey walked up to the stage, he did not appear to make eye contact with Quan, who was visibly excited to meet the actor. Instead, Downey Jr. took the award and shook hands with a couple of the other presenters.

Viewers were quick to call out Downey Jr. for snubbing the Everything Everywhere All at Once star.

The way he took the Oscar from Ke Huy Quan without acknowledging him at all showed a real lack of class.

Some even compared the moment to this year’s Grammy Awards. During that show, superstar Taylor Swift was called out for appearing to ignore the legendary Celine Dion when she presented Swift with the award for Album of the Year.

whew robert downey jr. doing a taylor swift – celine dion snub on ke huy quan is kinda rude tbh  #oscars #oscars2024

Hmph. It’s the lack of eye contact to Ke Huy Quan for me.
Reminds me of The Grammys.

Robert Downey Jr. was not the only one called out for allegedly ignoring a prominent actor when accepting their award. Emma Stone — who won the Best Actress in a Leading Role Oscar for her role in Poor Things — was presented with the award by Michelle Yeoh.

One X (formerly Twitter) user noted that both Downey Jr. and Stone ignored the actors of Asian descent when they went on stage.

Emma Stone & Jennifer Lawrence, and Robert Downey Jr.(of course) were unconsciously discriminating against Asians. And We are Very Angry About it Happened. Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan are so wonderfully talented and popular and loved by Asians. So I’m so upset now.

It appears that the entire thing may have just been a huge misunderstanding, with the actors caught up in the moment, not realizing what they were doing. Both actors were spotted backstage after receiving their awards, hugging and posing with Quan and Yeoh.

Last night’s win was the first Oscar win for Robert Downey Jr. It was the second win for Emma Stone, who also won in 2017 for her role in the musical, La La Land.
