Jodi Benson Shares Emotional Memory of Howard Ashman at 75th Anniversary

Today would have been Howard Ashman’s 75th birthday, and if you’re a fan of Disney, chances are you’ve felt his impact, even if you didn’t know his name. As the lyricist behind some of Disney’s most beloved songs, Howard had a rare gift for giving animated characters real heart. And nowhere is that more true than in Part of Your World.”

This one song captures everything Ariel is dreaming of. It’s emotional, honest, and central to what makes The Little Mermaid unforgettable. A considerable part of that magic comes from the connection between Howard and Jodi Benson, the voice of Ariel, who recently shared a touching memory that reminds us just how personal this story was.

When Jodi Met Howard: A Disney Magic Moment

Part of Your World wouldn’t be what it is without Jodi Benson. Howard personally chose her to voice Ariel, and their connection in the studio was something special.

In a video shared by @DisneyOnBroadway on Instagram, Jodi talked about what it was like recording that song with Howard by her side:

Jodi brought Ariel to life with vulnerability and strength, and Howard helped shape every moment of that performance. Today, both are recognized as official Disney Legends, and The Little Mermaid continues to inspire new generations, largely thanks to their work together.

A Legacy That Still Echoes

Howard Ashman didn’t just help create The Little Mermaid. He helped kick off what’s now called the Disney Renaissance, teaming up with composer Alan Menken to bring a Broadway-style approach to animated films. Together, they wrote hits for Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Ariel’s story.

The Little Mermaid won two Oscars, including Best Original Song for Under the Sea” and Best Score. But ask most fans what they remember most, and Part of Your World” is usually the answer. It’s the moment that makes you fall in love with Ariel and Howard’s gift for writing lyrics that actually mean something.

Sadly, Howard passed away in 1991 from AIDS-related complications. He was only 40. But his work brought visibility to the AIDS crisis in the arts and theater world, and his legacy lives on in every kid (or adult) who’s ever belted out Disney songs in their bedroom.
