The anticipation has been building as the release date for the live-action The Little Mermaid grows nearer. The film has been in the works for years, and fans are eager to learn every detail of what it was like filming the movie. Recently, Halle Bailey, who stars as Princess Ariel, has revealed more about what it was like filming “under the sea.” Fans were shocked to learn about all that it took to film a movie like this.
“The Little Mermaid” Took Halle Bailey to New Extremes
When preparing for a role of a lifetime like Ariel, Halle Bailey knew that it would be tough. She would soon learn that it would be the toughest thing she would do yet. In an interview with Edition magazine, Bailey got candid on the true difficulties of becoming a Disney princess. “I pushed myself as far as I’ve ever pushed myself in life,” Bailey told the publication about spending some days on set in the water for 13 hours. “And I feel like the message from [Ariel] was to know that you’ve always had it in you.”
It’s touching to see that bailey drew courage from the spirit of the character she was performing. On top of Ariel being a challenging role on a vocal level, the movie being live-action added a difficult piece for her physically. Jodi Benson, the original mermaid Ariel, had a very different experience with it being an animated film.
Halle told the Editorial that some days she would spend 13 hours shooting in water. Making all of the water elements look realistic is important and incredibly challenging. Hopefully, all of her grueling work will pay off.
In the interview, Bailey revealed that her Little Mermaid narrative is about much more than just leaving home for a boy. Bailey elaborates, saying “It’s way bigger than that. It’s about herself, her purpose, her freedom, her life and what she wants.”
Fans will be able to see the full story very soon when the Walt Disney Pictures film directed by Rob Marshall comes to theaters on May 26. The film also stars Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem, Daveed Diggs, and many more.
