“Goonies Never Say Die!” – A Sequel to the Iconic 1985 Film is Coming Soon!

It’s hard to believe that nearly 40 years have passed since Mikey (Sean Astin), Mouth (Corey Feldman), Data (Ke Huy Quan), and Chunk (Jeff Cohen) embarked on a thrilling adventure in The Goonies (1985), a film that would go on to become a beloved cult classic.

Set in Astoria, Oregon, the story follows a group of kids trying to save their homes from being demolished to make way for a new country club. They set off on a wild treasure hunt in search of One-Eyed Willy’s legendary gold, hoping it would be enough to stop the foreclosure of their families’ properties.

The stakes were high, but the heart of the movie was rooted in the bond of friendship. As the kids face off against the dangerous Fratelli crime family—led by the brothers Francis and Jake, and their tough mother—it’s a race to find the treasure before the bad guys do.

Despite all the danger and drama, it’s Chunk and the unlikely ally, Sloth, who save the day, ensuring Mikey and his friends make it out safely.

In the end, Mikey and the Goonies don’t leave with a fortune, but a few key pieces of treasure, including some valuable gold, are tucked away in Mikey’s marble bag, guaranteeing that their friendship and memories will stay intact.

The cast also included Josh Brolin as Mikey’s older brother, Brand; Kerri Green as Andy, Brand’s crush; and Martha Plimpton as Andy’s best friend, Stef. These characters, along with their timeless adventure, have stayed etched in the hearts of fans for nearly four decades.

A Sequel Almost 40 Years in the Making

Fast forward to February 14, 2023, and an exciting announcement was made: The Goonies is officially getting a sequel! Warner Bros. has revealed that a follow-up film to the beloved classic is in the works, much to the delight of fans who’ve been clamoring for more Goonie adventures.

The announcement came with news of a new screenwriter being brought onboard: Potsy Ponciroli, known for his work on the TV series Still The King. While there’s still no confirmed plot or director for the sequel, the return of The Goonies franchise has created an exciting buzz within the film community.

Perhaps most notably, Steven Spielberg, who wrote the story for the original film (though he did not direct it), will return as a producer on the sequel. Chris Columbus, who penned the original screenplay, will also serve as a producer, ensuring that the spirit of the first film will be well represented.

In fact, Warner Bros. shared more details about the project:

Warner Bros. has hired Potsy Ponciroli to write the script for the sequel, it was announced Friday — almost 40 years after the original movie hit theaters back in 1985. Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario will produce for Amblin Entertainment alongside Chris Columbus, who wrote the original “Goonies” script. Lauren Shuler Donner will executive produce. There is no director attached to the sequel yet, and there are no plot details revealed yet.

Although no director has been attached to the project yet, the film’s nostalgic roots are in capable hands.

Could the Original Cast Return?

As of now, details about which members of the original cast will return remain unclear. However, several actors have expressed their excitement about the potential for a sequel and their desire to reprise their roles.

Ke Huy Quan (Data) shared his enthusiasm about the possibility of a sequel, saying he’s frequently asked by fans if he’d like to return. “I would love for it to happen,” he said, showing his eagerness to once again take on the role of the inventive and resourceful Goonie.

Meanwhile, Corey Feldman, who played Mouth, had this to say about the prospect of reuniting with his castmates: “All I can say is, get us all together. Everybody is looking good. Sean’s looking good. Josh is looking good. We’re all looking good still, and we’re all alive. Goonies never say die…There’s hope.”

Feldman’s optimism mirrors that of many fans who grew up with the movie and continue to keep it close to their hearts. It’s clear that, even after nearly four decades, there’s a genuine desire from both the cast and the audience to see the Goonies back on screen, even if just for one more adventure.

The Cast’s Journey Since the Original Film

The stars of The Goonies have gone on to have incredibly successful careers in Hollywood, with many continuing to make waves in the entertainment industry.

Ke Huy Quan, who portrayed Data, had a quieter career in the years following The Goonies before making a triumphant return to the spotlight in 2021.
