When it launched in November 2019, Disney+ was touted as the ultimate streaming service for Disney fans. Not only that, but there was also content for those who loved Marvel and Star Wars. Millions quickly signed up for the service, which also had original programming, like The Mandalorian, The Imagineering Story, and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

Unfortunately, it has been a very bumpy ride for Disney+. While the streamer quickly gained a lot of traction, it is now in a spiral, losing millions of subscribers each quarter. Now-fired CEO Bob Chapek said that Disney+ would be profitable by 2024, but he is currently being sued for making those statements. In just four years, The Walt Disney Company has lost $11 billion on Disney+.
When Bob Iger stepped back into the role of Disney CEO in November 2022, he knew that Disney+ would have to be one of his biggest focuses. Then, early last year, he announced that the company would be taking a much more critical look at the content they were making for Disney+. They would also be cutting the budgets of most shows in an attempt to cut $5.5 billion from Disney’s total budget.
That critical look has resulted in the cancellation of A LOT of shows on the streaming service. And now, another show can be added to the list. According to reports, Disney has canceled American Born Chinese after just one season.
According to an individual with knowledge of the decision, Disney was high on the creative of the series, but its viewership did not justify greenlighting a second season. The producers plan to shop the series to other outlets.
News of the series’ cancellation comes just one day after the launch of the series “The Brothers Sun” on Netflix, which also stars Michelle Yeoh. Quan also recently appeared in Season 2 of the Marvel series “Loki” at Disney+. Cretton, meanwhile, is working on the upcoming Marvel-Disney+ series “Wonder Man” as co-creator, director, and executive producer.
Fans of the series will definitely be disappointed to hear about its cancellation, especially since the show was so highly rated. It is currently sitting at an 84% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The show was even more beloved by critics, who gave the show a 92% rating.
American Born Chinese starred Ben Wang as Jin Wang, Michelle Yeoh as Guanyin Pusa, Yeo Yann Yann as Christine Wang, and Chin Han as Simon Wang. Jimmy Liu played Sun Wie-Chen, Ke Huy Quan was Freddy Wong, Sydney Taylor played Amelia Taylor, and Daniel Wu played Sun Wukong.
2023 was not a good year for Disney+ originals, with more than five being canceled. Disney canceled Doogie Kamealoha MD, Big Shot, The Mysterious Benedict Society, and National Treasure: Edge of History. Disney also decided to cancel two series that had been filmed, but not yet aired — The Spiderwick Chronicles and Nautilus, which was based on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
