Zoe Saldaña’s has spoken out yet again on how she nearly left Hollywood after dealing with Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but in the even Steven Spielberg saved her outlook on the industry.

Zoe Saldaña’s initial foray into blockbuster cinema occurred with the 2003 film, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Despite its commercial success, Saldaña has often described her experience on set as negative, impacting her perception of large-scale Hollywood productions. Saldaña has expressed that the behind-the-scenes dynamics during the filming did not foster a supportive environment, which left her feeling lost within the demanding parameters of a major Disney project.

Her lack of a positive experience on Pirates of the Caribbean was further emphasized when she later disclosed her feelings about the leadership on set. She noted that while the cast and crew were generally talented, the absence of kindness and awareness from higher-ups created a distressing atmosphere. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer later publicly apologized to her, acknowledging the misguided management decisions that contributed to her discontent on set.

In a 2022 conversation with Entertainment Weekly, she elaborated, “I walked away feeling like I hadn’t had a good experience overall. I felt lost in the trenches, and I didn’t think that was okay.” Years later, producer Jerry Bruckheimer personally apologized to her for the experience.

Fortunately, she had The Terminal lined up next. “I worked with Steven Spielberg eight months later, and he restored my faith that big productions can be great,” Saldaña shared. She recalled feeling “so good and so safe” on set, highlighting how Spielberg would play music over the loudspeakers between scenes to keep everyone “synchronized and on the same page.”
