In 1992, Kevin and the rest of the McCallister family returned to the big screen and, as you may have guessed, Kevin was once again alone. But this time, he was not at home. Instead, he was lost in New York City while the rest of his family was in Florida. Unfortunately for Kevin, the Wet Bandits had escaped prison and were also in the Big Apple.
Kevin is quite a resourceful child, so, of course, he managed to get himself a room at the Plaza Hotel. While looking for the lobby so he can check in, Kevin asks a man which direction to go in. That man? Former President Donald Trump.
It has been more than thirty years since Kevin was lost in New York and managed to save Christmas for hundreds of children, but the movie has found itself back in the headlines.

Recently, a 2020 interview with the film’s director, Chris Columbus, resurfaced. In the interview, Columbus claimed they could not recreate the lobby of The Plaza, so they wanted to shoot in the hotel. Donald Trump owned The Plaza at the time, and Columbus claimed that Trump told them that they could only shoot in the hotel if he was in the movie.

Typically, studios will pay a fee to use a location. Columbus said that they paid the fee, but that wasn’t enough for the former president.
“We paid the fee, but he also said, ‘The only way you can use the Plaza is if I’m in the movie. So we agreed to put him in the movie.”
“People cheered when Trump showed up on-screen. So I said to my editor, ‘Leave him in the movie. It’s a moment for the audience.’ But he did bully his way into the movie.”
However, Trump did not like what Columbus had to say — taking to Truth Social to dispute the claim.
30 years ago (how time flies!), Director Chris Columbus, and others, were begging me to make a cameo appearance in Home Alone 2. They rented the Plaza Hotel in New York, which I owned at the time. I was very busy, and didn’t want to do it. They were very nice, but above all, persistent. I agreed, and the rest is history! That little cameo took off like a rocket, and the movie was a big success, and still is, especially around Christmas time. People call me whenever it is aired. Now, however, 30 years later, Columbus (what was his real name?) put out a statement that I bullied myself into the movie. Nothing could be further from the truth. That cameo helped make the movie a success, but if they felt bullied, or didn’t want me, why did they put me in, and keep me there, for over 30 years? Because I was, and still am, great for the movie, that’s why! Just another Hollywood guy from the past looking for a quick fix of Trump publicity for himself!
Despite Trump’s claim that the movie would not have been successful without his cameo, in 2019, the Canadian Broadcasting Company decided to cut his scene from the film when it aired on Christmas Day. The scene continued to be cut from other airings, especially after the January 6 attack on the US Capitol building.
Home Alone and Home Alone 2 are both available to stream on Disney+. They were created by 20th Century Fox, but became a part of Disney when the Mouse House purchased 20th Century in 2019.
