Disney’s Controversial ‘Bluey’ Overhaul Has Fans Divided After 150+ Episodes

More than 150 episodes have made Bluey one of the most recognizable animated characters on television.

Now, she’s getting a makeover for the big screen.

The Bluey Movie (2027) will take the massively successful children’s franchise into theaters for the first time, but it won’t simply bring the television show’s familiar appearance to a larger screen.

The movie is moving from Bluey‘s established 2D aesthetic to CG animation.

It’s one of the most noticeable changes the franchise has made since its 2018 debut, and fans have plenty to say about it.

The Bluey Fans Know Is Changing

Part of Bluey‘s appeal has always been its simplicity.

The show doesn’t rely on highly detailed animation to tell its stories. Instead, its colorful environments and straightforward character designs create a distinctive world surrounding Bluey, Bingo, Bandit, and Chilli.

That formula has worked extraordinarily well.

The series has grown into a worldwide hit and became Disney+’s most-watched series globally in 2024, according to Disney. Its success has now opened the door for something even bigger with The Bluey Movie (2027).

However, going bigger also means looking different.

The theatrical movie is officially CG-animated, with Cosmic Dino providing full CG animation services. That includes work ranging from concept art and storyboards through animation, lighting, and the final image.

First Look Leaves Fans Divided

Audiences recently got a much better idea of what that means.

Footage revealed at Disney’s D23 event showed Bluey and Bingo playing with a red balloon in a game of “keepy uppy.”

The scene maintained the colorful world audiences expect from Bluey, but the added dimension was impossible to miss.

Some viewers loved it.

Others immediately questioned why filmmakers would move away from an animation style that had worked across more than 150 episodes.

According to The Direct, reaction became particularly intense after the teaser appeared online. Some fans argued that Bluey‘s existing animation was already timeless and didn’t need to be replaced for a theatrical movie.

Other viewers were much more optimistic, praising how the CG characters looked.

The Biggest Test Comes in 2027

The change is significant, but The Bluey Movie (2027) isn’t abandoning the talent behind the original series.

Joe Brumm, who created Bluey, is writing and directing the movie. Ludo Studio is producing in collaboration with BBC Studios, and familiar voices will also return.

That continuity gives the movie an opportunity to prove that Bluey is about much more than its animation style.

After all, families didn’t turn the show into a global phenomenon simply because of how it looked. Its humor, family relationships, imaginative games, and surprisingly emotional storytelling helped build that audience.

Still, changing such a recognizable part of a franchise after 150-plus episodes comes with risk.

Fans have spent years getting used to Bluey one way. In 2027, they’ll find out whether her biggest adventure can convince them to embrace something very different.

The Bluey Movie (2027) opens August 6, 2027.
