Disneyland’s Fantasmic! Hasn’t Recovered From 2023 Fire, Future Now in Question

More than three years have passed since flames dramatically changed one of Disneyland’s most famous nighttime shows.

Fantasmic! eventually returned to the Rivers of America, but the production never completely recovered.

Its enormous Maleficent dragon remains missing. Other effects haven’t returned. Now, additional technical problems are affecting fountains, pyrotechnics, character barges, and portions of the finale.

Disneyland hasn’t announced the end of Fantasmic!, and the show continues operating.

However, after 34 years, Disneyland may be approaching a point where simply keeping Fantasmic! running isn’t enough.

The Night Everything Changed for Fantasmic!

On April 22, 2023, guests watching Fantasmic! saw something nobody expected.

The towering Maleficent dragon caught fire during the performance.

The fire destroyed the massive figure and led to Fantasmic! disappearing from Disneyland for more than a year. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Disney eventually brought Fantasmic! back in May 2024, but it returned without its dragon.

Instead, Disneyland modified the confrontation between Mickey and Maleficent.

That allowed Fantasmic! to continue, but one of the show’s defining effects was gone.

And it still hasn’t returned.

The dragon isn’t Fantasmic!’s only longtime missing effect. Aladdin’s flying magic carpet remains absent as well, despite reportedly coming close to a return before the 2023 fire changed those plans.

New Problems Are Piling Up

More recently, the situation has become even more noticeable.

WDWNT reports that Fantasmic! has gone multiple nights without fireworks and pyrotechnics, although the reason hasn’t been confirmed.

The lack of pyro creates other changes throughout the performance.

Mickey’s disappearing and reappearing finale effect hasn’t operated under these conditions, and Maleficent has appeared using a simpler contingency setup.

Some fountains aren’t functioning properly either.

During one recent performance, only 15 of Fantasmic!’s 21 fountains appeared operational.

Character barges have faced problems as well. One missing vessel resulted in Rapunzel and Flynn Rider being moved, while Belle and the Beast were removed from that sequence.

Other characters and show elements have reportedly been missing during select performances.

Fantasmic! is still running, but these problems add to a show that has already spent years without some of its biggest effects.

What Happens to Fantasmic! Now?

Disney hasn’t announced a closure or major overhaul.

That’s important because there’s currently no confirmation that Fantasmic! is going anywhere.

Still, its current condition raises legitimate questions about how Disneyland handles the production moving forward.

A replacement Maleficent dragon has reportedly been in development, but Disney hasn’t announced when it might debut.

There have also reportedly been plans for a larger Fantasmic! refurbishment that would restore and improve effects. Those plans have been shelved for the time being as Disneyland focuses on other projects.

That doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll never happen.

In fact, the growing number of problems could eventually make a major refurbishment more necessary.

Fantasmic! debuted in 1992. Keeping a production of that scale running after 34 years requires considerable maintenance and investment, especially when it relies on fountains, boats, projections, fire, pyrotechnics, moving equipment, performers, and other complicated elements working together.

The 2023 fire created a major setback.

Three years later, Fantasmic! still hasn’t completely moved beyond it.

Disneyland could eventually decide to rebuild missing effects and restore the show. It could also take the opportunity to reimagine Fantasmic! for another generation.

For now, Mickey’s imagination continues taking over the Rivers of America after dark.

The bigger question is how much longer Disneyland can keep the current version running before Fantasmic! needs something much larger than another temporary fix.
