Disney’s $142M Splash Mountain Replacement Is Already Falling Apart After 2 Years

Disney World guests expect occasional technical problems. Rides break down, effects stop working, and even the most advanced attractions need repairs.

But Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is becoming harder to excuse.

The Magic Kingdom attraction opened just over two years ago, replacing Splash Mountain after Disney permanently closed the longtime Frontierland ride in January 2023. Despite its young age, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is already experiencing problems with several important pieces of its elaborate show.

Projectors have gone down for lengthy periods, while Audio-Animatronics figures have also stopped working properly. One guest recently reported seeing three separate ride scene projectors down during the same experience.

For an attraction this new, the growing list of problems raises serious questions.

Disney Spent Heavily Transforming Splash Mountain

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure opened at Magic Kingdom on June 28, 2024, following a massive transformation of Splash Mountain.

Disney never publicly confirmed the attraction’s final construction budget. However, Forbes previously estimated Disney spent roughly $142 million transforming the Splash Mountain attractions at Walt Disney World and Disneyland.

The project introduced a completely different story inspired by The Princess and the Frog (2009), along with new music, sets, lighting, projection effects, and dozens of Audio-Animatronics figures.

Disney also faced enormous expectations.

Splash Mountain had operated at Magic Kingdom since 1992, building a loyal following over more than three decades. Disney’s decision to replace it became one of the company’s most controversial modern theme park changes.

That means its replacement was always going to face intense scrutiny.

Two years later, repeated technical problems aren’t helping.

Major Effects Aren’t Working

A broken effect isn’t unusual at Disney World.

The bigger concern is how widespread the problems appear to have become.

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure depends heavily on its show scenes. Guests encounter numerous Audio-Animatronics characters throughout the bayou, while projection technology helps create several environments and moments along the journey.

When multiple elements aren’t operating, guests receive a noticeably different experience.

Reports of malfunctioning Audio-Animatronics figures have followed the attraction since its early days. Projector problems have become another concern, including effects remaining unavailable for extended stretches.

Three projectors reportedly being unavailable during a single ride-through isn’t simply one minor effect temporarily malfunctioning.

It points toward a larger maintenance problem Disney may eventually need to address.

Two Years Shouldn’t Look Like This

Perhaps the most concerning part is the attraction’s age.

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure isn’t an aging Disney classic trying to survive on decades-old technology. It celebrated its second anniversary in June.

Disney spent years designing and building this experience. The company introduced sophisticated figures and effects specifically intended to make the attraction feel like a modern replacement for Splash Mountain.

Those elements need to work.

The situation also comes as Disney completely transforms the surrounding Frontierland area.

The Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and Liberty Belle Riverboat are gone as Disney prepares the area for Piston Peak National Park. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has also undergone an extended refurbishment.

That could make another major closure particularly difficult.

Disney hasn’t announced an extended refurbishment for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and there’s currently no confirmation that one is planned.

Still, the attraction’s condition raises a difficult question.

If individual repairs aren’t solving these recurring problems, how long can Disney continue fixing them one at a time?

Two years after opening, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure should still feel new. Instead, Disney is already dealing with problems that make its expensive Splash Mountain replacement appear much older than it actually is.
