Thanks to the wild success of Greta Gerwig’s recent Barbie feature film, Barbie dolls are totally back in! Good news, Barbie movie lovers, you don’t have to choose between your excitement for the Warner Bros. Pictures film and your passion for all things Disney! Because 1998’s Animal Kingdom Barbie has you covered.
This version of Barbie is a Disney exclusive line of Barbie dolls that feature animals and nature-themed outfits and accessories in the vein of Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. These dolls are dressed as various animals like tigers, lions, and zebras and come with additional accessories like animal print clothing, animal masks, and animal-inspired hairstyles.
Inside her animal print box, Barbie rocks a pith hat and pearls, as any respectable explorer would! The back of the box reads, “Barbie is ready to guide you through Disney’s Animal Kingdom, an amazing Park that celebrates all kinds of animals, from imaginary creatures and beasts from long ago to real-life cuddly critters.”
The artwork on the packaging depicts Animal Kingdom’s centerpiece, the Tree of Life, which in real life has “over 325 animal carvings.’” It asks you to spot some of the wildlife included in the box’s drawing. If you can’t find them all, don’t worry, because this Barbie is an animal expert!
This wild Disney Barbie was released the same year as the opening of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park, and is now a collector’s item that’s only increased in value since Barbie smashed the box office. Right now, there’s a totally unopened one going on Amazon for nearly $100!
It’s rare that the magical world of Barbie joins forces with the magical world of Disney, and modern fans are thrilled to know a product like this exists. Disney Princess Barbies certainly have their place, but this Barbie is much more valuable in the mind of Disney Parks goers.
What a blast from the past! Did/Do you own an Animal Kingdom Barbie??
