Disneyland Park Confirms Surprise ‘Toy Story’ Replacement After Years of Silence

A Disney location that guests could easily walk past without giving it much thought has unexpectedly become relevant again.

The space once had a clear purpose, but that disappeared over time. Its old identity gradually vanished, the location rarely operated as originally intended, and it eventually became one of those park areas that seemed to be waiting for Disney to decide what came next.

That answer has finally arrived, at least for now.

Disney has turned the former location into a Toy Story character experience as refurbishment work continues elsewhere. Instead of leaving the space largely unused, Disney has found a new way to reintegrate it into daily park operations.

Whether this becomes its permanent future is another question entirely.

A Familiar Sheriff Has Moved In

The location is Barrel of Monkeys at Disney Adventure World in Disneyland Paris.

Guests visiting Worlds of Pixar can now head inside the former shop for a chance to meet Sheriff Woody from Toy Story.

That’s a major departure from the building’s original purpose. Barrel of Monkeys previously operated as a retail location, but it hasn’t functioned as a store normally in years.

Its retail identity had already begun to disappear before the new experience arrived. Disney removed signage and other references identifying the location as a store some time ago.

Now, characters have taken the place of merchandise.

Disneyland Paris says guests can meet Woody “or one of his friends” there. That means visitors shouldn’t assume Woody will necessarily be there every time.

Still, the new setup gives Toy Story fans another character opportunity while putting an underused Worlds of Pixar location back to work.

Another Project Helps Explain the Timing

The arrival of characters at Barrel of Monkeys coincides with refurbishment work affecting another part of the area.

Crush’s Coaster is currently undergoing refurbishment, and that project has also removed the usual Pixar meet-and-greet location from circulation.

Disney is now using Barrel of Monkeys as another place for those character interactions.

The former shop was already rarely used, making it a convenient location for a different kind of experience. Its old retail branding had disappeared as well, so Disney didn’t have to transform an actively operating store into a meet-and-greet space.

What happens afterward remains unclear.

Disney hasn’t confirmed that Barrel of Monkeys will remain a character location permanently. The Pixar meet-and-greet could eventually return to its previous home once refurbishment work ends.

Bigger Work Continues Around the Park

The new use for Barrel of Monkeys comes during a much broader period of activity around Disneyland Paris.

Disney Adventure World continues to evolve as Disneyland Paris works on existing attractions and introduces new experiences.

Crush’s Coaster provides a good example of how one refurbishment can have an impact beyond the attraction receiving the work. In this case, the project has also affected the normal location used for Pixar character encounters.

Disney still needs somewhere for those interactions to happen.

Rather than create an entirely new venue, the resort can use an existing space that had already lost much of its previous function.

It’s a relatively small adjustment compared to the larger work happening around Disney Adventure World, but guests can experience the result immediately.

Visitors Should Check Before Heading Over

The change gives families another reason to explore Worlds of Pixar, particularly if meeting characters is an important part of their day.

However, guests shouldn’t automatically expect Woody.

Disneyland Paris says Woody or one of his friends may appear, so checking the app before heading to Barrel of Monkeys could help avoid confusion. Meet-and-greet times are also available there.

The situation is another reminder that refurbishment work can affect more than ride availability.

Construction can change walking routes, character locations, and other experiences around an attraction. Returning visitors may discover that something they remember from an earlier trip has temporarily been moved elsewhere.
