Disney World Makes Toy Story Land Change That Was Once Off-Limits
Toy Story Land has always had an unusual limitation.
Disney could use one of Pixar’s biggest franchises, but Imagineers couldn’t necessarily add anything from Toy Story wherever they wanted.
That’s because when Toy Story Land opened at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on June 30, 2018, Disney established a specific setting. Guests had shrunk to toy size and stepped into Andy’s backyard.
Everything needed to work within that story.
Now, eight years later, Disney is making a change that suggests those restrictions are disappearing.
Toy Story 5 (2026) Is Entering Andy’s Backyard
Alien Swirling Saucers is getting a major update beginning September 25.
Lilypad, the antagonist introduced in Toy Story 5 (2026), will become the attraction’s DJ. “Lilypad’s Jams” will introduce remixed Toy Story favorites alongside original songs covering several genres.
Disney is also changing the attraction’s entrance with a Lilypad’s Jams overlay.
On its own, it’s an understandable refresh for an attraction that has operated since Toy Story Land’s opening day.
But Lilypad creates a problem Disney previously tried to avoid.
The character comes from a completely different period of the Toy Story timeline than the version of Andy represented throughout the land.
There has been no indication that Lilypad belonged to Andy. Considering when Andy was a child, the character doesn’t naturally fit into his collection, either.
Yet Lilypad is about to become a visible part of his backyard.
Disney Is Breaking Its Own Storytelling Restriction
That makes the update especially notable when compared to Pizza Planet.
Fans have wondered for years why Disney didn’t build the iconic restaurant inside Toy Story Land. After all, Pizza Planet dates back to Toy Story (1995) and is instantly recognizable to fans.
The problem was the setting.
Toy Story Land wasn’t supposed to represent the entire Toy Story universe. Guests were inside Andy’s backyard, where everything around them needed to fit that particular environment.
A full Pizza Planet didn’t.
Lilypad shouldn’t necessarily fit, either.
But Disney is apparently no longer allowing that original storytelling restriction to stand in the way of updating the land.
A Different Future for Toy Story Land
This doesn’t mean Toy Story Land is getting a complete overhaul.
Instead, Disney may be gradually changing what the land represents.
If characters from Toy Story 5 (2026) can exist alongside toys and environments specifically designed around Andy’s childhood, Disney suddenly has far more options for future additions.
That’s arguably the biggest consequence of the Alien Swirling Saucers update.
Disney isn’t simply changing the music on one spinning attraction. It’s demonstrating that newer Toy Story stories can now enter a land originally built around Andy’s backyard.
After eight years of working within those boundaries, Disney appears willing to cross them.
And once Lilypad starts DJing inside Andy’s backyard on September 25, something that once seemed off-limits will officially become part of Toy Story Land.
