BREAKING: Disney Changes Toy Story Land Overnight, Breaking Its Own Rule
Yesterday the debate was about what Lilypad’s arrival would mean for Toy Story Land.
Today she is physically standing there.
The larger-than-life tablet is installed outside Alien Swirling Saucers at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, sitting on a large orange toy block. Not active yet, displaying only her “The Pond” interface.
Disney said Lilypad debuts Friday, September 25. The hardware arrived a week early.
Now that she is an object in the land rather than a line in a press release, the storytelling problem stopped being hypothetical.
What Is Installed at Disney Now
The tablet is in place and currently inactive.
The Alien Swirling Saucers marquee has not been updated with the “Lilypad Jams” banner from Disney’s concept art. That connects to a separate permit filed this summer, after an earlier set installation permit for the area.

The Problem
Toy Story Land opened June 30, 2018, on one premise.
You have shrunk to toy size. You are in Andy’s backyard.
Not decoration. The organizing rule. Slinky Dog Dash is something Andy built. The oversized blocks, game pieces, fences, and Christmas lights establish scale and tell you where you are.
Lilypad is from Toy Story 5, released this year.
Andy was a child decades before that character could exist. Nothing Disney has established suggests she was one of his toys, and given his era, explaining how he owned her is genuinely difficult.
Disney never had to answer that. Now it does.
Why the Rule Mattered
Disney enforced it for years.
Pizza Planet is the example everyone cites.
Obvious addition on paper. One of the most recognizable locations in the original Toy Story, and Disney previously ran a Pizza Planet-themed restaurant elsewhere at Hollywood Studios.
It never came, because a full-sized Pizza Planet cannot exist in a land where you are a four-inch toy on a lawn. You cannot be inside the restaurant and also be tiny in a backyard.
Imagineers built around that.
Lilypad does the opposite. Instead of protecting the timeline, Disney placed a 2026 character inside Andy’s childhood.
You cannot have it both ways.
What About Bo Peep
The obvious follow-up question, with a less obvious answer.
Bo Peep has been notably absent from Toy Story Land. If Disney now accepts characters who were not Andy’s toys, can she come home?
But Bo Peep is the easy case, not the hard one.
She was part of that household, attached to Molly’s lamp, living alongside Woody before the events that took her away. Whatever complications her story carries, she has a legitimate claim to the setting that Lilypad does not.
Which is what makes this precedent significant. Disney did not bend the rule for a character who nearly fit. It started with one who does not fit at all.
If Lilypad belongs in Andy’s backyard, Bo Peep obviously does. So does nearly anyone.
September 25 at Disney
The attraction update is substantial on its own.
Reimagined versions of “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” “We Belong Together,” and “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away” join the lineup, plus new originals “Pizza Planet Promo” and “Spin It Back, Lilypad.”
The soundtrack spans pop, country, EDM, and alt-rock.
Guests passing between ride cycles can:
- Guess which toy she is doodling on her drawing app
- Help her unscramble puzzles
- Watch “home videos” of Toy Story characters
Greta Lee voices Lilypad.
Biggest change to Alien Swirling Saucers in eight years, borrowing visibly from The Happy Ride with Baymax at Tokyo Disneyland, where rotating music makes the surrounding area part of the show.
As a ride update, rotating music makes repeat rides genuinely better.
The Timing
Toy Story 5 hits Disney+ September 23.
Lilypad debuts September 25.
Two days apart. Not a coincidence, and the clearest answer available for why the rule bent.
A land locked in Andy’s 1990s childhood cannot promote a 2026 movie. A general Toy Story land can.
What Changed at Disney
No retheme announced. Slinky Dog Dash unchanged. Woody’s Lunch Box staying. Roundup Rodeo BBQ still there. Giant Woody is not moving.
Physically identical.
The rulebook is what changed.
Eight years of everything needing to make sense because you were a toy in Andy’s backyard. Starting Friday, a 2026 character is there too.
Once that line goes, future additions never need justification. New attractions do not have to fit his childhood. Previously impossible concepts become easy.
Bo Peep included.
Some will call it a loss. Others will note it keeps the land from being frozen in 2018.
Both fair. The tablet is already up.
