Disney World Reportedly Gives Family the “Run Around” After Botched Legacy Lightsaber Mishap

Owning a Legacy Lightsaber from Disney World offers an extraordinary experience for Star Wars fans. If you’re visiting the Walt Disney World Resort, immerse yourself in the galaxy far, far away at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Here, you can explore the Black Spire Outpost, a bustling marketplace on the remote planet of Batuu.

Legacy Lightsabers at Walt Disney World

Guests to Disney’s Hollywood Studios can live out their dreams of becoming part of a galaxy far, far away by joining the Jedi or Sith with one of their iconic weapons, one from a more civilized age.

One of the highlights of Galaxy’s Edge is the opportunity to purchase a legacy lightsaber—these meticulously crafted replicas of the iconic lightsabers wielded by some of the most beloved Star Wars characters. From Luke Skywalker to Darth Vader, you can find a wide range of legacy lightsabers available for purchase.

The easiest way to pick up one of these intergalactic beauties is to grab a boxed version at several shopping locations around Disney’s Hollywood Studios. However, First Order and Resistance fighters can also acquire their own legacy lightsaber at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities.

Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities

This fascinating shop is run by Dok-Ondar, a collector who specializes in rare and valuable artifacts. Inside, you’ll find an impressive display of lightsabers harking back to various eras of the Star Wars saga.

Each legacy lightsaber comes with a distinctive hilt and an interchangeable blade, allowing you to customize your weapon. The attention to detail is remarkable, with every lightsaber featuring authentic sound effects and lighting effects. Holding one of these lightsabers truly makes you feel like a Jedi or Sith.

In terms of selections, there’s a lot to pick from at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. You’ll find lightsabers that belong to popular mainstream favorites like Rey Skywalker, Yoda, and Darth Sidious, while more obscure Star Wars characters are also available, including Cal Kestis, Ahsoka Tano, and Ezra Bridger.

Each saber comes in a collectible box lined with cloth worthy of such a sophisticated weapon and adorned with an emblem marking them as Sith, Jedi, resistance, and so on. As the boxes come taped closed, it could be easy to mix up these lightsaber hilts if you aren’t paying close attention, and that’s exactly what happened to a close friend of ours on a recent Disney World trip to Galaxy’s Edge.

Disney World Botches Legacy Lightsaber Purchase

Late last summer, some friends of ours came down to visit us here in Florida. During their stay, they had one day to spend doing whatever they wanted. The decision was made that we’d spend it at Disney, which is about two hours away from where they were staying.

During the visit, which was the day before they had to return home, we had a wonderful time exploring the magic and wonder of Magic Kingdom before park-hopping over to Hollywood Studios to enjoy Galaxy’s Edge.

As no trip to Batuu is complete without a lightsaber, our friends explored Dok-Ondar’s, trying out different hilts, such as those that belong to Cal Kestis, Ahsoka Tano, and Kanan Jarrus.

After spending a pretty long time looking at sabers, the decision was in. Despite all the new Star Wars Rebels characters and famous force-wielders from popular video games like Jedi: Fallen Order, they picked Rey Skywalker!

The lightsaber was for their teenage son, and he wanted to pay for it using a series of gift cards he had received for his birthday. As most of you know, it’s a proud moment when you can purchase your first legacy lightsaber.

With a new lightsaber blade and lightsaber hilt in hand, we spent the remaining time in the park talking about which we were all going to purchase next. Would it be Luke Skywalker or maybe Darth Maul?

After the park closed, we made our way to the vehicle to make the two-hour commute back home before they’d leave the next morning. About halfway through the drive, we learned that the Cast Member at Dok-Ondar’s had given our friend the wrong saber. Instead of Rey, he received Kylo Ren’s.

This presented an interesting problem, as they were leaving the next morning. However, given Disney’s exceptional customer service, we felt strongly that a single phone call would sure up the situation.

Wrong! I called myself, being the most familiar with Disney, and was told to have the family call and explain the situation, and that Disney would then send a return label and refund the money for the saber hilt they’d received by mistake.

So, that’s exactly what they did; only Disney told them that they couldn’t do an exchange, so they’d have to purchase the new saber, return the wrong one, and then they’d refund the money. So, like any of us would do, they jumped on shopDisney and bought the hilt they wanted in the first place. They shipped the Kylo Ren version back to Disney, but weeks went by, and no refund ever came.

A new phone call to Disney revealed that they couldn’t refund the purchase due to the use of gift cards to buy the original lightsaber hilt in the first place. They had paid for two hilts and, due to a Cast Member mistake, only ended up with one. This trip happened almost six months ago, and to my knowledge, they still haven’t received their money back despite having bought a replacement saber and shipping the Kylo Ren hilt back.

Double Check Those Lightsabers

So, let this serve as a warning to you. Before making your purchase, take the time to explore the different options available, but, as these hilts are completely enclosed, it isn’t difficult for mistakes to be made, leaving you with a saber hilt that you didn’t want in the first place. So, double-check them!

You might be drawn to the elegance of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s lightsaber or tempted by the power of Darth Maul’s double-bladed weapon, but you may end up with Darth Sidious or Darth Tyranus by accident.

Of course, this isn’t an issue over at Savi’s Workshop, where force wielders get to manufacture their own unique and individually styled lightsabers. But, no matter which one you choose, it doesn’t hurt to double-check before leaving the park, especially if you don’t have immediate access to Walt Disney World.

Owning a legacy lightsaber is a remarkable way to celebrate your love for Star Wars. For this reason, it’s important to note that legacy lightsabers are a popular item and can sell out quickly. If you have your heart set on a specific lightsaber, consider arriving early in the day or checking the Disney Parks Blog for updates on availability. As well, be sure to budget accordingly, as legacy lightsabers will set you back a pretty penny.

Once you’ve acquired your legacy lightsaber, don’t forget to showcase your Jedi or Sith skills as you explore Galaxy’s Edge. Whether you’re conversing with other Star Wars enthusiasts or engaging in a thrilling lightsaber battle, the legacy lightsaber becomes a cherished souvenir and a symbol of your Star Wars fandom.

In conclusion, the legacy lightsabers at Disney World bring the magic of the Star Wars universe to life, and although Batuu is fabulously themed, there are still humans working there who make mistakes, so double-check your enclosed hilt once you leave Dok-Ondar’s.

Despite this reported incident, their detailed craftsmanship and immersive experience, they are a must-have for any Star Wars enthusiast visiting the Walt Disney World Resort. So, embrace your inner Jedi or Sith and make memories that will last a lifetime with your very own legacy lightsaber. May the Force be with you!
