Every year, Disney releases its popular Rainbow Collection. The collection features a number of fun collectibles — from pins to shirts, Loungefly backpacks, Mickey Mouse plushes, mouse ears, and more. The collection is meant to celebrate Pride month and is also typically released in conjunction with Gay Days at both Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World. While Disney is continuing with tradition and releasing this year’s collection soon, it will have a new name, Disney’s Pride Collection.
The move to change the name of the collection from the Rainbow Collection to the Pride Collection comes as Disney struggles to let its LGBTQ+ fans and Cast Members know that it supports them. Disney has been fighting an uphill battle on that front since it decided to stay quiet as the Parental Rights in Education bill made its way through the Florida House and the Florida Senate. At the time, it was reported that CEO Bob Chapek was keeping quiet about the bill because he found it “irrelevant” to the company and how it does business.
Finally, after days of mounting pressure, both Chapek and Disney released statements, condemning the bill. Chapek went on to apologize to the LGBTQ+ Cast Members, acknowledging that he let them down. Chapek said that Disney was going to form a task force to fight the Parental Rights in Education bill, and they would work to see that it was repealed in the courts.
Changing the name from Rainbow Collection to Pride Collection is just one more step Disney is taking to show its support. This year’s Pride Collection will not only feature Disney merchandise, but also merchandise from Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar. Photos below share a sneak peek at the collection, which will be released at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
Let’s take a look!
This year, Gay Days will take place at Disneyland Resort from September 16 through 18 and is expected to draw thousands of people to The Happiest Place on Earth. Gay Days in Orlando will last a little longer — as they traditionally do — and will take place from May 31 to June 6. June kicks off Pride Month, so expect to see all of this great, new merchandise throughout the theme parks at that time.
