For the past week, all the world has been focusing on is Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Just days ago, Vladimir Putin sent tens of thousands of troops into the neighboring country, and Ukraine is actively battling to keep control. Many companies have spoken out against the Russian invasion and have stopped doing business with them. There have also been numerous sanctions levied against Russia. The hope is that crippling their economy will draw them out of Ukraine.

One of the companies that has stopped most business in Russia is Disney. On February 28, the company shared a statement saying that they were pausing all theatrical releases that were scheduled.

Given the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and the tragic humanitarian crisis, we are pausing the release of theatrical films in Russia, including ‘Turning Red’ from Pixar. We will make future business decisions based on the evolving situation. In the meantime, given the scale of the emerging refugee crisis, we are working with our NGO partners to provide urgent aid and other humanitarian assistance to refugees.

Disney’s quick response to Russia’s unprovoked invasion led many fans to demand Disney speak out on another important issue. Florida’s state government is in the midst of passing the Parental Rights in Education bill.  The bill has been nicknamed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. The bill has already passed in the Florida House of Representatives and is poised to pass in the State Senate.

Walt Disney World is one of the largest employers in the state. The Resort also brings tens of millions of dollars into the state every year. Those two things together mean Disney may be able to have some sway on significant issues. So far, Disney has remained mum on the bill, which is not sitting right with many fans, including Mom For Humanity (@coachmom40).

That’s nice of you, can you do something about the “Don’t Say Gay” Bill in FL that will terrorize LGBT families? Because you donate to some of the politicians supporting that bill.

Tommy Hawkins also called on Disney to say something, citing the fact that former CEO Bob Iger has said that passing the bill will put LGBTQ youth “in jeopardy”.

Please speak up on the #DontSayGay bill, @RobertIger already spoke up on this why can’t the company? The values haven’t chsnge that much in a month surely

KatieCL (@ktdoesitbest) also called Disney out, reminding them that they just added a fifth key to their company policy last year. That key was Inclusion, and it joined Safety, Courtesy, Show, and Efficiency.

Great. Thanks. But why haven’t you made a statement on the “don’t say gay” crap happening in Florida? Especially since you added the 5th key last year.

Disney has remained quiet in the days since the bill passed the Florida House, but an investigation revealed that the company had donated to every one of the bill’s sponsors and cosponsors. Disney has been actively working to make their company look like a welcoming place for all, regardless of race, gender identity, or sexual orientation. Now many are just waiting for them to enforce that belief.
