Disney Gives Surprise Preview of ‘Monsters, Inc.’ Land Ahead of 2027 Hollywood Studios Opening
Mike and Sulley aren’t ready to fully welcome guests to Monstropolis just yet, but Disney is starting to show more of what awaits them when they do.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios is preparing for a major expansion inspired by Monsters, Inc. (2001), with portions of the new land scheduled to begin opening in 2027. Until now, some of the biggest additions have received the most attention.
But there is much more going into this monster-sized project.
Disney has now provided an unexpected preview of Monstropolis. And it gave fans a better idea of how Disney intends to turn a familiar animated world into a place guests can eventually explore.
The Glob Theater Gets a Closer Look
One of the biggest reveals centers on the Glob Theater.
New concept art shows more of the building’s exterior, including a large marquee welcoming guests to Monstropolis. The sign reads “Welcome to Monstropolis,” with “A Scarefree Theatrical Extravaganza” appearing underneath.
Disney has also placed movie posters featuring Mike Wazowski and Sulley outside the theater.
Together, those details give the building the appearance of a classic movie theater, but Disney has added the kind of monster humor that helped define Monsters, Inc. (2001).
That humor doesn’t stop once guests move beyond the exterior.

Disney Packs Monster Humor Inside
Another piece of concept art takes fans inside the Glob Theater, revealing even more details.
Large chandeliers hang from the ceiling, featuring giant monster eyes in their designs. Disney has also continued the movie-poster theme inside the building, using monster-inspired twists on recognizable titles.
Among them is “Silence of the Cribs.”
There also appears to be a concession area inside the theater, although exactly how Disney plans to use it remains unclear.
Disney hasn’t confirmed that the area will actually sell food or drinks. It could simply be part of the theming, helping the building look and feel like a working theater inside Monstropolis.
If this section becomes a waiting or preshow area, details such as posters, chandeliers, and concession setup could give guests plenty to see as they move through the building.

Laugh Canisters Make an Appearance
Disney’s newest preview doesn’t stop with the Glob Theater.
Fans can also get a closer look at the familiar laugh canisters connected to Monsters, Inc. (2001).
The containers closely resemble those seen in the movie, although Disney’s version appears to have something extra near the bottom. The addition looks similar to a microphone.
That would fit with the story of Monstropolis. Laughter eventually replaces screams as the city’s source of power, making the canisters an easy way to connect the new land with the movie.
We believe Disney could place these canisters throughout Monstropolis. They could simply add another layer of environmental storytelling, or Disney could potentially find ways to make them interactive.
For now, exactly how Disney plans to use them remains a mystery.

Guests Won’t See Everything in 2027
While these details offer something new, Disney has already confirmed much larger plans for Monstropolis.
At D23 in 2026, Disney announced that the land will begin its phased opening at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2027.
That doesn’t mean everything will arrive at once.
Parts of Monstropolis, including the Glob Theater, will welcome guests first. Meanwhile, Disney will continue working on the massive suspended door-vault coaster.
The future attraction takes inspiration from the famous door sequence in Monsters, Inc. (2001). Riders will eventually enter the door of the warehouse, bringing one of the movie’s most memorable locations into the theme park.
Harryhausen’s will also become part of Monstropolis. Fans may recognize the sushi restaurant from the movie, and Disney has confirmed that its memorable sushi chef will appear as part of the experience.

Disney Is Building More Than a Coaster
It’s easy to see why the door-vault coaster has received so much attention, but Disney’s newest reveals show why the rest of Monstropolis could matter just as much.
The Glob Theater, monster chandeliers, parody posters, laugh canisters, and Harryhausen’s all help create the feeling of an actual city rather than an area built around one major ride.
Parts of that city will begin opening at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2027, while the door-vault coaster will come later.
Until then, Disney still has more to reveal about exactly what will await guests when they finally make their way into Monstropolis.
