Disney Channel’s Debby Ryan Spent Six Months in Neurological Rehab
Debby Ryan has revealed she suffered a “life-altering brain injury” a few years ago.
The former Disney Channel star spent six months out of work and six months in neurological rehabilitation. She says parts of what she lost never returned.
She shared it during a September 15 appearance on Mythical Kitchen’s Last Meals, as reported by Variety and USA TODAY.
In Her Words
“I had a pretty crazy, life-altering brain injury a few years ago, and I was out of commission for six months,” Ryan said. “And I went to this neurological rehab for six months, went and did this fringe science treatment that was really sci-fi and crazy, and I’ve done it a couple times and it kind of got me back online.”

Five Concussions
Ryan described five concussions before the injury.
Four were incident based. The fifth came from “sustained shaking” over the course of a minute. She gave no further details about any of them, and none have been reported.
“Specifically, I would say after the fifth concussion, the brain injuries make things significantly worse,” she said.
That progression is not random. Repeat concussions compound. Each one typically demands a longer recovery than the last, and a brain still healing is more vulnerable to the next hit. Five is a lot.
What caused them, she has not said.
Living With It
The most striking part was not the injury. It was the aftermath.
“I’m a migraine warrior, and quite often the world is really loud. It’s really too bright. It’s too, there’s a lot going on,” she said.
She went further on the visual side:
“The brain of it all is that quite often I can just see better or think better with my eyes closed. The visual data that I’m taking in can be so distracting and so loud.”
Sensory overload like that is a known part of brain injury, and it is largely invisible. From the outside it reads as distraction or fatigue. From the inside, ordinary light and noise cost real effort.
Before and After
Ryan gave herself two names.
“There’s sort of pre-incident Debby and post-incident Debby,” she said.
Splitting life into a before and an after is common among people living with traumatic brain injuries, and so is the harder part, accepting that the version on the other side is not identical. It does not appear on a scan. It is not a symptom anyone can see.
She talked about what that was like for the people around her, including husband Josh Dun, drummer for Twenty One Pilots.
“I couldn’t imagine being on the other side of it, going like ‘Wow, I guess that looks like my wife, and she’s talking like my wife. And then suddenly, behaviors completely different, and this doesn’t fit the pattern.'”
Ryan said she feels “really fortunate” to have had an “amazing team of people” around her.
“They sort of reminded me who I am, and was, and also held a lot of space for that to change, potentially permanently, and love me through that.”

Where She Said It
One detail is worth noting.
This did not come out through a magazine cover or a scheduled interview. It came out on a comedy food show on YouTube, mid conversation.
That is where a lot of disclosure happens now, and it produces different answers. The line about seeing better with her eyes closed would not survive a publicist.
Her Disney Run
Ryan broke out in 2008 as Bailey Pickett on The Suite Life on Deck opposite Dylan and Cole Sprouse.
She then led Jessie from 2011 to 2015, four seasons and 98 episodes, alongside Peyton List and the late Cameron Boyce.
Other credits include 16 Wishes, Radio Rebel, Insatiable, and most recently The Sun Never Sets.
She has not said when the injury happened beyond “a few years ago,” or connected it to any particular project.
