Disney Buying Fox Changed One of Its Most Iconic Films
Sometimes, a business decision can change the track a movie or television show was supposed to take fairly significantly. For example, Disney buying distribution rights to Doctor Who gave the latter a massive breath of fresh air (and money) it desperately needed.
Recently, it came to light that when Disney bought 20th Century Studios, they ended up impacting the storyline of Deadpool and Wolverine; here’s what the original story was supposed to be.
In Deadpool (2016), we follow a “wisecracking and foul-mouthed” masked vigilante, Deadpool, real name Wade Wilson, as he goes about delivering justice to people who have wronged him in the past. The movie also featured the characters Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), Francis Freeman / Ajax (Ed Skrein), and more.
The Deadpool franchise—an X-Men spinoff—was quite successful and even has a third movie in the works that will come out later this year on July 26th: Deadpool and Wolverine with Hugh Jackman. And per ScreenRant, Deadpool movie actor Karan Soni reveals that Deadpool & Wolverine almost had a different Marvel story before Disney acquired 20th Century Fox.
Karan Soni explained, “It was going to be originally a roadtrip movie where Deadpool tries to save Christmas, so we all go to the North Pole.”
This time, as Ryan Reynolds returns as Wade Wilson, he will “finally be entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe.” The Deadpool franchise becoming a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a huge win for the trilogy since it’s a breath of fresh air.
The X-Men movies under 20th Century Fox had been struggling, unlike the Marvel universe, and so Wade Wilson joining Disney’s ranks of Marvel movies(think Captain America and more) is sure to have a positive impact.
It will certainly be exciting to see Wilson’s (and Reynolds’) Marvel Universe journey begin this summer.
