Disney animation enthusiasts might not have anything to look forward to in 2024. An updated list of next year’s releases recently revealed an intriguing list of Disney’s upcoming projects. But here’s the kicker – where’s the Walt Disney Animation Studios magic in 2024?

No Walt Disney Animation Studios Film in 2024

The go-to Disney journalist Scott Gustin gave us the scoop on what’s cooking in the House of Mouse for next year. Curiously, it seems several majorly anticipated projects and films are absent from the list, and Walt Disney Animation Studios lacks anything in the pipeline to share.

Here is the list of 2024 Disney projects, according to Gustin.

  • Echo – Marvel Studios/Disney+ (January 10, 2024)
  • The First Omen – 20th Century/Theatrical (April 5, 2024)
  • Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes – 20th Century/Theatrical (May 24, 2024)
  • Inside Out 2 – Pixar/Theatrical (June 14, 2024)
  • Untitled Deadpool – Marvel Studios/Theatrical (July 26, 2024)
  • Untitled Alien Event Movie – 20th Century/Theatrical (August 16, 2024)
  • Agatha: Darkhold Diaries – Marvel Studios/Disney+ (Fall 2024)
  • The Amateur – 20th Century/Theatrical (November 8, 2024)
  • Mufasa: The Lion King – Disney/Theatrical (December 20, 2024)

Let’s break it down. The list reveals a powerhouse of Marvel, 20th Century, and Pixar projects but notably lacks Disney Animation releases. No animated feature to get excited about next year? That’s a bummer.

Disney’s Lackluster 2023

Acknowledging Disney’s hurdles in 2023 would be fair – the writers’ and actors’ strike threw a wrench into the company’s gears. Delays were inevitable, reshuffling was unavoidable, and now we see the consequences.

Disney Animation’s latest movie, Wish (2023), disappointed at the box office. Despite many anticipating the holiday season release, the film failed to turn a profit and received mixed reviews. Could this financial fumble be influencing the decision to take a breather?

The surprises don’t end there. Noticeably absent is a previously announced untitled 2024 Walt Disney Animation Studios film. With no news on the status of sequels Frozen 3 and Zootopia 2, 2024 will likely be a dry period for the studio.

Other Noticeable Missing Disney Projects

Pixar’s first Disney+ series, Win or Lose, and Lucasfilm’s second season of Andor (2022) are also missing from the list.

However, the situation managed to get a response from Pixar Producer David Lally. Win or Lose will still be released in 2024 with eight episodes, but it has no date to announce at this time.

Not yet dated: Pixar’s first original 8 episode series, WIN OR LOSE, will also release in 2024 on Disney+! More announcements to come this year!

Disney Animation Studios did not release a film in 2020. Notably, this was largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Before that, 2017 was the only noticeable year without a release. However, Disney doubled up in 2016 with Zootopia and Moana.

Let’s hope Walt Disney Animation Studios is working hard on some exciting projects and will have more information soon. With such a lackluster 2023, we would have hoped for more to see in 2024. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.
