Dismantling the Past: Universal Strips Original ‘Jurassic Park’ Animatronics From the Ride

Construction walls have surrounded Jurassic Park River Adventure for months, but the latest look behind them reveals just how extensive Universal Orlando’s refurbishment has become. Newly released images show several of the attraction’s familiar dinosaurs and scenic elements taken apart as work continues on one of Islands of Adventure’s most recognizable rides.

Now, newly released construction photos offer the closest look yet at the work taking place inside the attraction. Several familiar dinosaurs and show scenes have been dismantled, giving fans a glimpse of a ride that currently looks very different from the one they’ve known for decades.

Universal has shared very few details about what this lengthy refurbishment includes, leaving guests to piece together clues from construction updates. While plenty of questions remain unanswered, the latest images do provide some insight into the progress.

A Classic That Still Anchors Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park River Adventure has welcomed guests since Islands of Adventure opened in 1999. Inspired by Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park (1993), the attraction begins as a relaxing boat tour through a dinosaur preserve, but quickly spirals into chaos.

The experience carefully mirrors the original film. Riders first encounter peaceful dinosaurs before entering restricted areas where containment has failed. The suspense steadily builds until guests come face-to-face with the enormous Tyrannosaurus rex just before the attraction’s signature plunge.

Even after Universal introduced Jurassic World VelociCoaster, River Adventure has remained the emotional centerpiece of the land for many longtime fans. While VelociCoaster celebrates the newer films, River Adventure preserves the atmosphere, music, and storytelling that made the original movie such a cultural phenomenon.

That lasting connection explains why so many guests have been closely following every update from this refurbishment.

A Nearly Year-Long Closure

Universal closed Jurassic Park River Adventure on January 5, 2026, with plans to reopen the attraction on November 20, 2026. By the time guests return, the ride will have been behind construction walls for more than 10 months.

A closure of that length naturally led fans to expect more than routine maintenance.

After nearly three decades of operation, the attraction has experienced occasional issues with animatronics and show effects. Some dinosaurs have stopped moving during certain ride cycles, while other scenes have not always performed as originally designed.

An extended refurbishment allows Universal to address many of those concerns while helping preserve one of Islands of Adventure’s opening-day attractions for years to come.

Even so, the latest construction photos have also sparked fresh discussion about exactly how much work is underway behind the scenes.

Rumors Continue Without Official Answers

Universal has confirmed the refurbishment schedule but has not announced whether the attraction itself will receive creative changes.

That silence has fueled ongoing speculation throughout the fan community.

Some believe River Adventure could eventually transition to a Jurassic World-inspired storyline instead of continuing to focus on the original Jurassic Park. Universal has not confirmed those rumors, and there is currently no official evidence that such a transformation is planned.

Other reports suggest the project centers on replacing or rebuilding portions of the ride system, restoring aging animatronics, and updating various show scenes.

Given the attraction’s age, those types of improvements would make sense. Modernizing mechanical systems while refreshing existing dinosaurs could improve reliability without changing the overall experience that generations of guests have come to love.

Inside the Construction Walls

Recent aerial images shared by Bioreconstruct on X reveal that crews are making significant progress throughout the attraction.

One of the most noticeable developments involves the massive Ultrasaurus. According to Bioreconstruct, workers appear to be installing new character animation, and photos show sections of the dinosaur’s outer skin pulled back while technicians work inside the figure.

Construction crews are also working on paddock walls and surrounding scenery, indicating that the refurbishment extends well beyond simple cosmetic touch-ups.

If Universal is rebuilding the internal systems that power several dinosaurs, guests could see much more consistent performance when the attraction returns.

Over the years, some riders have encountered a stationary Tyrannosaurus rex at the finale, while others have experienced ride cycles in which the Parasaurolophus failed to emerge from the water during one of the attraction’s signature moments. Several additional dinosaur figures have also shown signs of wear over time.

Refreshing those systems could restore many of the effects that helped establish River Adventure as one of Universal’s most memorable attractions.

Looking Ahead to November

Universal has not revealed exactly what guests will find when Jurassic Park River Adventure reopens, but the latest construction photos suggest this project goes far beyond basic maintenance.

Between work on the Ultrasaurus, updates throughout the paddock areas, and apparent attention being given to multiple dinosaur figures, the attraction appears to be receiving one of the most extensive refurbishments in its history.

Whether the finished product remains entirely faithful to Jurassic Park or includes subtle changes inspired by Jurassic World remains unknown. Until Universal shares more, fans will continue watching every construction update for new clues.

When the boats begin sailing again on November 20, guests will finally discover how one of Islands of Adventure’s most beloved opening-day attractions has evolved after nearly a year behind construction walls.
