Unfortunately, it’s not hard for actor Johnny Depp to find his name swept up in another controversy.
Johnny Depp, known for his roles in iconic films such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Edward Scissorhands, found himself embroiled in a legal battle last year against his ex-wife, Amber Heard. The couple’s tumultuous relationship quickly turned into a courtroom drama that had the world watching as closely as they watched his films.
Now, the highly scandalous civil defamation trial has been turned into an equally polarising Netflix series.
‘Depp v. Heard’ Docuseries Is Divise, but the Audience Is There
On April 11, 2022, the trial between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp began. The so-called “Trial by TikTok” became a massive talking point due to the high-profile actors involved and the constant twists and turns throughout. At points, the trial was so ridiculous that it almost felt as if it was a scripted TV series.
Emma Cooper, a director known for making controversial series like Epstein’s Shadow: Ghislaine Maxwell, took on the trial in her new docuseries, Depp v. Heard. The series follows the entire six-week trial in a three-part series. On August 16th, 2023, the series premiered on Netflix and gained traction right away. Netflix describes the trial, saying;
“Showing both testimonies side-by-side for the first time, this series explores the trial that set Hollywood ablaze and the online fallout that ensued.”
The series opened at No. 1 on Netflix’s English-Language TV Chart and had 16.2 million total views from August 16 through 20.
How Will ‘Depp v. Heard’ Affect Depp’s Career?
While the series is undeniably a success, many fans are still upset that it is coming out. Right now, both Heard and Depp are trying to recover their careers from the defamation trial, and a docuseries reigniting the events of last spring is the last thing they could need.
Recently, many people have also been putting pressure on Disney to once again bring back Depp for a new Pirates of the Caribbean film. This kind of press coming up once again is probably not going to help push Disney in Depp’s direction.
While the trial was extremely fascinating to watch, it was also a very sad and upsetting situation. Fans of both Depp and Heard should want peace and recovery for these actors during this time. For now, Depp will be busy recovering from his world tour with his band, The Hollywood Vampires.
