This weekend, however, the movie was dethroned by an unlikely competitor.
Avatar: The Way of Water Leaves the Top Three
Avatar: The Way of Water follows Jake Sully and his family as they are forced to defend themselves once again against the humans. They seek shelter in a new region of Pandora, where they meet a new water-based tribe of Na’vi people. The film shows audiences the incredible nature and wildlife living in the waters of Pandora. Avatar: The Way of Water, wowed audiences with its incredible story and the spectacle of experiencing Pandora.
The film has currently made over 2.2 billion dollars worldwide since its release, making it a Box Office sucess. The film earned four Academy Award nominations, an incredible feat but still less impressive than Avatar, which has nine nominations.
Until this weekend, Avatar: The Way of Water was sitting comfortably as #3 on the list of highest-grossing films. The #1 highest grossing film is the original Avatar, and the #2 spot belongs to Avengers: Endgame. That all changed this weekend when Titanic overtook Avatar: The Way of Water and claimed its place as the third highest-grossing film of all time.
James Cameron vs James Cameron
Titanic was able to re-enter the top three after it returned to theaters to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the film. James Cameron, who also directed Titanic, is now the director of three out of the four highest-grossing films in movie history. Anthony Russo and Joe Russo still hold the #2 spot for their work directing Avengers Endgame. This is also a huge win for Disney, who owns the rights to the Avatar franchise and Marvel. Fans on Twitter poke fun at the fact that James Cameron has dominated the charts.

Only time will tell if the rankings for the highest grossing movie will stay the same over time. The competition between James Cameron and himself is genuinely entertaining to watch.
