When Elon Musk bought Twitter, now officially known as X, he claimed he was doing so to fight for free speech. Many felt the platform had become a breeding ground for one-sided discussion: anyone who disagreed with the status quo was shut down. Musk says he bought the social media app to try to combat that and open it up for two-sided conversation and debate. Now he’s making another big claim: lawsuits.
Musk says he will do anything in his power to fight against those who “cancel” or “doxx” (i.e., fire) employees for opinions expressed on his site. That includes funding legal battles (“no limit,” he said) and PR campaigns against those organizations. In his post, he said, “And we won’t just sue, it will be extremely loud, and we will go after the boards of directors of the companies too.”

After the post was published, Gina Carano replied to the message simply saying, “I think I qualify.” Her post alluded to her firing from the hit Disney+ series The Mandalorian after a series of tweets and Instagram posts that criticized lockdowns during the pandemic and compared them to Nazi Germany. In her post, she likened being Republican to being a Jew during the Holocaust. Disney fired her after the hashtag #FireGenaCarano trended on X (then Twitter) and Instagram.

A representative from LucasFilm said, “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm, and there are no plans for her to be in the future,” a Lucasfilm spokesperson said in a statement. “Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”
Fans on X were quick to express their support and encouraged Elon Musk to put his money where his mouth is and take on Disney in court. Others suggested Musk should just buy Disney outright. The hashtag #justiceforGina is trending and brings to mind a similar sentiment during the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard defamation trial, where #justiceforjohnny was widely shared to express support.
It remains to be seen whether Elon Musk is willing to go toe to toe with Disney à la Ron DeSantis or not. Musk hasn’t always lived up to what he says he will do, but if anyone can afford to take Disney, it’s Elon Musk. We will closely monitor the situation and let you know if #justiceforgina gains traction.
