In 1997, an unknown British author named J.K. Rowling released a book that would go on to change the lives of millions worldwide—Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. In the U.S., the book was titled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. It introduced the story of a young boy named Harry Potter, an orphan who lives with his cruel Aunt Petunia, Uncle Vernon, and spoiled cousin Dudley.

Harry’s life has been difficult and lonely, but on his eleventh birthday, everything changes. He discovers that he is a wizard and leaves his miserable home to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There, he also learns that he is famous as “The Boy Who Lived,” after surviving an attack by the dark wizard Lord Voldemort that killed his parents.

The tragic murder of Rob Knox, the young actor known for his role as Marcus Belby in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009), has been a topic of discussion since his death on May 24, 2008. Knox, only 18 at the time, was fatally stabbed outside a Sidcup bar while attempting to protect his younger brother from an attacker.

Knox was a novice actor with considerable potential, having just completed filming his scenes for the sixth installment of the blockbuster Harry Potter franchise. He had signed on to reprise his role in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (2010), making his untimely demise all the more heartbreaking for his family, friends, and fans.

Karl Bishop, then 21 years old, was charged with the murder of Rob Knox. Reports indicate that Bishop had been involved in an altercation with Knox and his friends the previous week, where he allegedly lost a fight.

Following this incident, he made threats to return for revenge. On the night of Knox’s murder, Bishop confronted Knox’s younger brother, Jamie, leading Rob to intervene in a desperate attempt to protect him.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as Bishop attacked Knox with two knives, resulting in five stab wounds, including a critical injury that severed a major artery. While Bishop ultimately received a life sentence, his conduct during the trial revealed a chilling lack of remorse. He infamously responded, “Yeah, sweet,” when informed he was being charged with murder.

The documentary K(n)ox: The Rob Knox Story, directed by Aaron Truss, delves into the events surrounding Knox’s murder and its aftermath. Released initially in film festivals, the documentary gained significant attention for its poignant message against knife crime. It features interviews with Knox’s family, friends, and fellow Harry Potter cast members, recounting their experiences and memories of him.

It includes unseen footage of Knox as Marcus Belby, moments captured behind the scenes during the filming of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and discusses the societal implications of such violence. Furthermore, the documentary addresses the ongoing struggle against knife crime in the UK, illustrating how Knox’s death impacted not just his family but also their community.

In his ruling, the judge acknowledged that while Bishop may not have intended to kill Rob Knox, it was deeply troubling that he showed no regard for the life he took.

Bishop is currently serving a life sentence, but is eligible for parole after 20 years. However, given his apparent lack of remorse, it seems highly unlikely that parole will be granted anytime soon.

U.S. residents who wish to watch K(n)ox: The Rob Knox Story can sign up for a free trial of BBC Select.
