Robert Downey Jr. recently recorded a message for Japanese fans of Avengers: Doomsday (2026), and it was more than a casting announcement. He revealed that Toshiyuki Morikawa will voice Doctor Doom in the film’s Japanese-language release. He also used the moment to remember Keiji Fujiwara, the performer who gave Tony Stark his Japanese voice across much of the MCU.

A Legacy Passed Forward
Fujiwara died in April 2020, aged 55, after a battle with cancer. For Japanese audiences, his voice was as closely tied to Iron Man as Downey Jr.’s own performance. By acknowledging Fujiwara’s work, Downey Jr. presented Morikawa’s casting as a continuation of that history. Morikawa follows Fujiwara as the Japanese voice of a Downey Jr. Marvel character, this time in a very different role.
Morikawa is one of Japan’s most established voice actors. His credits include Sephiroth in Final Fantasy, Griffith in Berserk, Enel in One Piece, and Minato Namikaze in Naruto. His record with commanding antagonists suits a villain built to anchor Marvel’s next major event. The announcement also confirmed that the film opens in Japanese theaters on Friday, December 18.
From Iron Man to Doctor Doom
Downey Jr.’s return is one of Marvel Studios’ most daring casting choices. The actor who defined the Infinity Saga as Tony Stark now plays Victor von Doom, a major figure in Marvel Comics and the Fantastic Four’s most enduring enemy. Doom is the central threat that brings together the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and legacy X-Men characters. It is still unknown whether the film will link Doom to Stark in any way. Marvel has also yet to show how it will distinguish the two characters.

The Russo Brothers Aren’t Done Yet
The cast facing Doom is already enormous, but directors Anthony and Joe Russo say it isn’t complete. Marvel revealed the ensemble in March 2025. Anthony Russo has since addressed fans’ suspicions directly in a Walt Disney press release: “The pattern that you’re sensing is real. We have absolutely not announced the entire cast. There is more to come.”
The directors haven’t said who those additions might be. Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk), who was missing from the initial reveal, is a leading candidate. Footage connected to Avengers Endgame: Encore (2026) shows Banner encountering Doom. That suggests a return but doesn’t confirm one, and the Hulk could just as easily be saved for Avengers: Secret Wars (2027). Fans are also hoping for Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, and Jeremy Renner, though those remain hopes rather than announcements.
Who’s Already Confirmed
The current lineup covers much of Marvel’s screen history:
- The Avengers side includes actors like: Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, Simu Liu, and Letitia Wright
- The Fantastic Four: Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach
- The X-Men veterans: Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Alan Cumming, Kelsey Grammer, and Channing Tatum
- Also announced: Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, and Hayley Atwell
With a roster that large, any new name could reshape the story.

A Question Mark Over Secret Wars
The second chapter is set for December 17, 2027. However, reports that filming could stretch into early 2027 have raised doubts about whether Marvel can finish an effects-intensive ensemble film on time. A move to 2028 would ease the pressure. It would also reshuffle the studio’s slate and delay the MCU’s next era beyond the Multiverse Saga. No postponement has been announced, and the date officially holds.
The Bigger Picture
Marvel is treating the two films as the defining crossovers of the Multiverse Saga. Doomsday is expected to establish Doom as the central threat, and Secret Wars will continue that conflict. The comics storyline sets heroes and villains from across the Marvel universe against each other, and many fans expect the films to rework MCU continuity and unite generations of characters. For now, Doomsday remains on track for December 2026, with more cast reveals promised and a fitting tribute already delivered to Japanese audiences.
