Long before the next generation of Star Wars movies and television shows, one of the franchise’s most recognizable adventures found a new audience through an entirely different medium.
Now, almost three decades after its original publication, Hisao Tamaki’s manga adaptation of Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) is being brought together in a new deluxe collection.
Announced during New York Comic Con this year, Star Wars: A New Hope – The Complete Manga is a 352-page omnibus collecting all four volumes of Tamaki’s adaptation.

The publisher’s description follows the familiar journey of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), who leaves his life on Tatooine and becomes involved in the Rebel Alliance’s fight against the Galactic Empire. Along the way, he encounters Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), with the Death Star looming over the galaxy as the Empire’s ultimate weapon.
As Penguin Random House explains, the collection presents a complete manga adaptation of the iconic film.
Celebrating the film’s 50th anniversary, this deluxe omnibus collects all four volumes of the Eisner Award–winning manga adaptation of Star Wars: A New Hope.
Star Wars: A New Hope (The Manga) presents a complete manga adaptation of the iconic film, chronicling Luke Skywalker’s journey from his quiet life on Tatooine to his role in the Rebel Alliance, as he joins Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Obi-Wan Kenobi in a desperate struggle against the Galactic Empire and its ultimate weapon, the Death Star.
Its arrival is particularly well timed. A New Hope is set to receive considerable attention in 2027, when the original Star Wars celebrates its 50th anniversary. Lucasfilm is preparing a newly restored theatrical release of the 1977 movie, and a Welsh-language version titled Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd, which premieres on S4C on Christmas Day.
The publishing schedule is also giving the film another moment in the spotlight. Star Wars: A New Hope – Triple Take will revisit the events through the perspectives of Luke, Han, and Leia, while Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles will bring the film into a crossover with the Marvel universe.

The anniversary plans aren’t limited to books and comics. Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Experience – A Journey Through the Galaxy will open at Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute on February 13, 2027, before touring North America.
There will also be live orchestral presentations of the original film and trilogy through Star Wars: A New Hope in Concert and Star Wars Weekender.
Of course, the franchise is also looking ahead rather than spending the entire year looking back. Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling, is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 28, 2027, while Disney+ will welcome the return of Ahsoka for its second season and the animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord.
Still, the original film appears to be one of Lucasfilm’s biggest priorities for the anniversary year. Between the theatrical restoration, new publishing projects, live events, and the return of Tamaki’s long-standing adaptation, 2027 is shaping up to be a particularly busy year for fans of Luke Skywalker’s first adventure.
