Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ Reportedly Suspended, 2027 MCU Release Highly Unlikely
Doctor Doom’s patchwork kingdom may be the endgame of the Multiverse Saga, but fans could be waiting longer than expected to see it on screen. According to a new report, Avengers: Secret Wars (2027) might not go before cameras until February 2027. That would make its December 2027 release date difficult to keep, and it could set off a chain reaction across the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), including the long-anticipated arrival of the X-Men.

What Battleworld Could Look Like
Story details remain unconfirmed, but unverified leaks reportedly tied to Avengers: Doomsday (2026) suggest its ending may open the door to Battleworld, the stitched-together reality expected to define Secret Wars. Previous reports have described a setting where Doctor Doom controls most of the MCU’s heroes and villains.
The Cosmic Circus’s Alex Perez compared the setup to WandaVision (2021), pointing to a medieval-flavored world that recalls the What If…? (2021) installment imagining the Avengers in 1602. Notably, Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch) has not been confirmed for the film.
Why These Two Films Matter So Much
Phase Six hinges on Doomsday and Secret Wars, both directed by Joe and Anthony Russo. The pair previously steered Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Marvel is leaning on them to recapture the franchise’s former consistency after a mixed stretch.
Kevin Feige has said Secret Wars will be used to fold the MCU back into one timeline, giving it an outsized role in shaping what comes next. Doomsday adds another major draw with the return of Robert Downey Jr., who swaps Tony Stark/Iron Man for Victor Von Doom/Doctor Doom.

Mixed Signals Since August
The confusion began in August, when reports claimed Secret Wars was already shooting at a UK base. Filmbase, a UK production tracker, subsequently reported that the shoot had been paused for about five weeks, with production expected to pick up again in late September.
Not everyone accepted that version of events. Insider Daniel Richtman said Doomsday was still in reshoots and that Secret Wars would begin at the end of September. MTTSH also said the work underway was additional photography for Doomsday, meaning the so-called hiatus may have been credited to the wrong movie.
Anthony Russo, speaking after San Diego Comic-Con, didn’t settle the matter. He said Doomsday was deep into post-production, with the score, sound mix, and other finishing work still in progress, and confirmed that Secret Wars prep had started. Asked when filming would begin, he would only say the date was drawing near.
The New Timeline
With late September now behind us and no confirmed start, Richtman reports that filming may slide to February 2027. For a film carrying this much visual effects work, that would cut deeply into the post-production schedule, leaving considerably less time than Marvel gave its earlier Avengers events.
If production does begin in 2027, a December 2027 release looks highly unlikely. Secret Wars would move into 2028, and Marvel could go a full year without a theatrical release, something the studio has rarely done since the MCU began.

The X-Men Question
The mutants may feel the impact most. Marvel confirmed its X-Men film, which has no release date yet, at D23 Expo 2026, along with nearly its entire cast. That lineup includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, who made her debut in the role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026). Since the X-Men are expected to anchor the MCU after Secret Wars, a delay to the Avengers would almost certainly push their introduction back too.
Where Things Stand
Officially, nothing has moved. Avengers: Doomsday is still set for December 2026, and Secret Wars remains dated for December 2027. If Richtman is right, though, both the Multiverse Saga’s finale and the X-Men’s MCU debut could arrive later than fans hoped.
Until Marvel Studios responds, the February 2027 date should be treated as a real possibility, not a confirmed plan. Expect more answers as Doomsday gets closer to theaters.
