Disney World has spent decades bringing countries from around the globe together at EPCOT, but two destinations that Disney once planned for World Showcase are still nowhere to be found.
When EPCOT first opened, Disney had much bigger ambitions for the park’s international offerings. Imagineers developed plans for additional countries, complete with elaborate architecture, cultural experiences, and entertainment.
Some of those ideas advanced well beyond early discussions. Disney even reached formal agreements to bring certain projects to life.
Unfortunately, not every proposed addition made it past the planning stages.
Now, as EPCOT continues operating with 11 official World Showcase countries in 2026, two ambitious projects remain absent. And despite more than four decades having passed, Disney has announced no plans to bring either back.

Disney Once Had Major Plans for Another Country
Long before EPCOT welcomed its first visitors in October 1982, Disney had already started planning additional World Showcase destinations.
One of those proposed additions was Israel.
Unlike some concepts that never progressed beyond preliminary discussions, Disney publicly promoted the Israel pavilion and took steps toward making it a reality.
In November 1980, Disney and Israeli representatives signed an agreement to develop the project. Joseph Wolff, an Israeli government adviser and tourism development official, participated in the agreement.
The proposed pavilion carried an estimated price tag of $30 million to $35 million.
Disney wanted guests to experience a combination of ancient and modern Israeli culture through carefully designed buildings, shopping areas, and entertainment.
Plans called for an information center inspired by ancient ruins near the entrance. Beyond that, guests would have entered a central courtyard filled with market-style shops.
The surrounding buildings would have blended traditional architecture with contemporary design.
Disney also envisioned an amphitheater where visitors could enjoy classical music and folk performances.
Despite those detailed plans, the pavilion never moved into construction.

Why Did This Pavilion Disappear?
By the mid-1980s, Disney had moved away from the project.
Historical reports suggested that security concerns played a role, including worries about political demonstrations or potential threats involving the proposed pavilion.
However, Disney never identified those concerns as the sole official reason for abandoning the development.
Whatever combination of challenges ultimately ended the project, Israel disappeared from EPCOT’s expansion plans.
More than 40 years later, nothing has changed.
As of October 2026, Disney has not announced plans to revive the Israel pavilion or introduce a new version of the original concept.
And another ambitious World Showcase proposal experienced a similar outcome.

Another Pavilion Never Opened
Disney also envisioned an Equatorial Africa pavilion that would introduce guests to the cultures and traditions of several African nations.
Imagineers planned to build the destination between China and Germany, creating another major international experience within World Showcase.
One of the proposed features was a towering 60-foot treehouse overlooking projected scenes of animals gathering around a watering hole.
The pavilion would also have offered traditional dancing, live music, and cultural presentations.
Another concept, Heartbeat of Africa, would have explored African history and cultures through an elaborate attraction.
However, financial difficulties complicated the project.
Reports indicated that participating nations struggled to secure funding, while disagreements about representation created additional challenges.
Disney also considered sponsorship involving South Africa, but political concerns connected to apartheid reportedly complicated those possibilities.
Eventually, Disney abandoned the larger pavilion.
The African Outpost later occupied the planned location between China and Germany, offering a much smaller African-themed experience.
Although the Outpost remained, the original Equatorial Africa concept never became reality.

EPCOT’s World Showcase Roster
Today, World Showcase continues operating with 11 official country pavilions: Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Italy, the United States, Japan, Morocco, France, the United Kingdom, and Canada.
Neither Israel nor Equatorial Africa appears in Disney’s current lineup.
It’s important to recognize that Disney hasn’t removed two operating pavilions. Both were historical proposals that never opened.
Norway, which joined World Showcase in 1988, remains the last new country added to the park.
That means EPCOT has gone approximately 38 years without introducing another permanent country pavilion.
Will Disney Ever Revisit These Plans?
Disney fans have long discussed potential additions, including Brazil, Spain, and India.
However, Disney has not announced construction plans for those countries or established a timeline for expanding World Showcase.
The company could eventually revisit Israel, Equatorial Africa, or another previously proposed destination.
For now, though, neither project has an announced future.
Unless Disney reveals new expansion plans, EPCOT guests can continue expecting the familiar 11-country World Showcase experience rather than the larger international lineup Disney once envisioned.
