Disney World Unleashes New Lightsaber Tech at Costly Galaxy’s Edge Experience

Disney World guests willing to spend extra on one of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge’s most immersive experiences are getting more for their money.

Savi’s Workshop at Disney’s Hollywood Studios lets fans create their own lightsaber rather than simply purchase one from a merchandise shelf. Guests choose the components, assemble their weapon, and leave Batuu with something they helped design.

Now, that experience has received a notable upgrade.

Disney has rolled out new lightsaber technology alongside the brand-new designs. Together, the changes give first-time builders more options while providing returning fans with a reason to consider building another lightsaber.

Savi’s Workshop Lightsabers Get New Technology

Some of the biggest changes aren’t immediately visible when guests start selecting their lightsaber components.

Disney has upgraded the chassis and blades used for the experience, adding several interactive effects.

The new technology includes thermal-cutting, deflection, and spinning effects. Lightsabers also feature improved audio and smoother blade activation, creating noticeable differences compared to previous versions.

Rare cracked Kyber crystals can unlock another feature. When used with compatible crystals, the system allows the blade to switch between blue and red with a quick wrist movement.

For repeat builders, those technological improvements could matter just as much as a new hilt design.

Instead of purchasing another lightsaber that only looks different, fans can leave Savi’s Workshop with one that also offers features their previous build may not have included.

Protection & Defense Enters Its Third Generation

The technology isn’t the only new reason to visit Savi’s Workshop.

Disney has also introduced the third generation of Protection & Defense, giving the theme a noticeably different appearance.

Inspired by the High Republic era and the Jedi Order, the V3 collection moves away from the predominantly silver appearance of the previous version. White and yellow-gold now dominate many of the pieces, creating a brighter and more decorative look.

Protection & Defense follows Power & Control, which received its own V3 collection earlier in 2026.

For fans who previously chose Protection & Defense, however, the newest collection provides an opportunity to create something that looks considerably different.

Guests Still Control the Final Design

Customization remains a major part of the Savi’s Workshop experience.

The latest Protection & Defense collection includes 10 available components. Guests can choose between two emitters, four sleeves, two switches, and two pommels.

Each finished lightsaber uses one emitter, two sleeves, one switch, and one pommel.

Those options give builders several possible combinations instead of forcing everyone to leave with an identical design.

The individual pieces also contain plenty of visual differences.

White and gold appear throughout the sleeves, along with imagery connected to the High Republic. One switch has a cleaner appearance, while the other features more elaborate gold detailing.

The pommels provide another choice between different styles. One combines white and decorative gold elements, while the other uses considerably more gold with white accents.

Even the emitters draw some inspiration from the original Protection & Defense collection while updating the overall appearance.

Are the Upgrades Worth the Expense?

Building a lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop remains an expensive addition to a Disney World vacation.

Whether that expense makes sense will depend heavily on the guest.

Someone who simply wants to own a Star Wars lightsaber may not see enough value in the experience. Savi’s Workshop instead appeals to fans who prefer to choose their own components and participate in the immersive building process.

The latest updates add more to that equation.

First-time builders now receive the upgraded technology, while returning fans can choose from dramatically different Protection & Defense pieces. The combination of new components, improved audio, smoother activation, and additional blade effects makes the finished product different from older builds.

For serious collectors, those differences could make another visit easier to justify.

The Star Wars Experience Continues Beyond Savi’s Workshop

Building a lightsaber is only one part of visiting Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

Guests can explore Black Spire Outpost, visit Oga’s Cantina, drink Blue Milk, and encounter Star Wars characters. They can also see recognizable vehicles, including the Millennium Falcon, X-wing starfighter, A-wing starfighter, and First Order TIE Echelon.

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance provides the land’s massive story-driven attraction, while Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run puts guests inside the famous ship’s cockpit.

Star Tours – The Adventures Continue adds another Star Wars attraction elsewhere at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Savi’s Workshop remains one of the more expensive souvenirs fans can take home from that experience. But between an entirely new Protection & Defense collection and upgraded lightsaber technology, Disney is giving builders more reasons to consider making that investment.
