Marvel Chooses New Lead for ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ Amid Reshoot Reports
Marvel has allegedly chosen an unexpected lead for its upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars (2027).
Before then, Marvel Studios will bring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes back together in Avengers: Doomsday, which hits theaters on December 18, 2026. Joe and Anthony Russo are directing, with Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU as Victor von Doom, the Multiverse-threatening villain at the center of the story.

The cast stretches across several corners of Marvel history. Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Captain America), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova/Black Widow), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier), and Letitia Wright (Shuri) are joined by the Fantastic Four and returning X-Men stars including Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier), Ian McKellen (Magneto), James Marsden (Cyclops), and Rebecca Romijn (Mystique).
Production has also attracted attention. Principal photography wrapped in September 2025, but Marvel planned a substantial period of additional shooting. David Harbour later confirmed he was back at Pinewood Studios with other Avengers, while reports in late August claimed reshoots were still underway only months before the film’s December release.

It’s said that these reshoots have incorporated more cameos into the project – including, allegedly, one from Wanda Maximoff.
Scarlet Witch Reportedly Takes Center Stage in ‘Secret Wars’
Marvel still has the Multiverse Saga finale scheduled for December 17, 2027, with the Russo Brothers returning, and filming is reportedly expected to begin around the end of September. That means cameras could start rolling while the final work on Doomsday is still being completed.
Much of the early chatter has centered on Maximoff. Recent rumors have suggested that additional filming featuring Elizabeth Olsen was intended for a Doomsday post-credits scene, potentially setting up a much larger role as Marvel moves directly into the second half of its two-movie Avengers story.

Now, insider MyTimeToShineH claims Wanda will not just appear in Secret Wars, but serve as one of its central characters. According to the scooper, “Wanda will be one [of] the main leads in Avengers: Secret Wars.”
Marvel Studios has not confirmed the claim or Olsen’s return as Wanda, but the possibility lines up with separate rumors that Marvel may borrow from Avengers: The Children’s Crusade.
In the comics, Wiccan searches for the missing Scarlet Witch, with Doctor Doom becoming heavily involved. Marvel has already introduced Billy Maximoff as Wiccan in Agatha All Along, creating an obvious MCU route into parts of that story.
A Wanda-focused storyline would also give Secret Wars another direct link to WandaVision and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). Wanda was last seen apparently dying beneath Mount Wundagore after destroying every copy of the Darkhold, although the MCU has never definitively closed the door on her survival.

Her return could also give Doctor Doom another powerful piece to manipulate. Wanda’s grief, guilt, and reality-altering abilities have driven several major MCU stories already, while Doom’s comic history with the Scarlet Witch gives Marvel plenty of material to adapt without following The Children’s Crusade beat for beat.
Marvel has not yet announced Olsen for either upcoming Avengers film, and reports about Wanda, a Young Avengers or Champions setup, and the exact Secret Wars story remain unconfirmed. With filming expected to begin soon, however, the secrecy surrounding Marvel’s 2027 finale may become harder to maintain.
