Sony Scraps Existing ‘Spider-Man’ Franchise, Will Reboot With New Series
Sony’s Spider-Man universe is changing shape once again.
For more than a decade, the studio has pursued several different versions of the Marvel superhero business at once. Its most successful remains Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, produced alongside Marvel Studios and woven directly into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
That partnership has delivered Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Far From Home (2019), No Way Home (2021), and this year’s mega-hit Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), while Sony has continued exploring characters from Spider-Man comics elsewhere.
Results outside Holland’s films have been far more uneven. The studio launched its own interconnected run of movies with the Venom trilogy, Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter, none of which matched the commercial strength of its MCU collaborations.
Television offered Sony another route into the Spider-Verse. Its partnership with Amazon produced Spider-Noir, starring Nicolas Cage, while additional Marvel projects have continued moving through development behind the scenes.
Now, that small-screen strategy is undergoing its first major shake-up.
Sony Ends ‘Spider-Noir’ After One Season
Amazon has officially canceled Spider-Noir, bringing Nicolas Cage’s live-action Spider-Man series to an end after just one season.
The Prime Video show debuted in May and marked Cage’s first regular television role. Rather than focusing on Peter Parker, Spider-Noir followed Ben Reilly, a private investigator operating in 1930s New York who was forced to confront his history as the city’s only superhero.
Critical response was strong. Spider-Noir earned a 92% critics score and 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while its 11 Emmy nominations made it Prime Video’s most-nominated series of the year.
Those accolades apparently were not enough to secure another season.
Despite its reviews, Spider-Noir reportedly struggled to maintain momentum with viewers and disappeared relatively quickly from Prime Video’s daily Top 10 ranking. That lack of sustained audience interest likely worked against the series as Amazon and Sony weighed its future.
Cost may also have played a role. Neither company has publicly disclosed the show’s budget, but Spider-Noir was produced in both color and black and white, adding another layer to what was already an ambitious period superhero production.
Its cancellation does not mean Sony and Amazon are walking away from Marvel television altogether.
Instead, they are preparing to move forward with something new.
A New ‘Spider-Man’ Series Is Already Taking Shape
Multiple projects based on characters from Spider-Man’s corner of Marvel remain in development through the Sony-Amazon partnership.
One unidentified project is reportedly approaching a series order, effectively giving the companies a fresh route forward after the end of Spider-Noir. Details about its characters, story, and creative team have not yet been revealed.
The planned shows are expected to follow a different distribution model from Spider-Noir, debuting first on MGM+ before subsequently becoming available on Prime Video.
That means Sony’s television Spider-Verse is not disappearing. It is instead being reworked around a new slate of series rather than continuing Cage’s version for another season.
The change comes as Sony’s theatrical Spider-Man business finds itself in a dramatically different position.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has become a gigantic box-office success, earning more than $2.3 billion globally and over $900 million in North America. The latter figure made it only the second movie in history to cross that domestic threshold.
There are already signs that Holland will remain central to Sony and Marvel’s plans.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said there are “always plans” when asked about another Holland film, while also explaining that Brand New Day leads into “more Spider-Man films.”
Producer Amy Pascal has similarly discussed Spider-Man 5, although Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have not formally announced a release date or production schedule.
Holland is not expected to appear in Avengers: Doomsday this December. Instead, rumors have pointed toward the possible return of Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker, continuing the MCU’s increasingly multigenerational approach to Spider-Man.
Holland’s version is reportedly expected to have a much bigger part in Avengers: Secret Wars, currently scheduled for December 2027. Early production on the blockbuster has already begun in the United Kingdom amid rumors of ongoing reshoots and additional filming for Avengers: Doomsday (including potential new cameos from other heroes, such as Scarlet Witch and Hawkeye).
