Disney World Coaster Suddenly Reopens After Mysterious 3-Day Shutdown

Disney’s Hollywood Studios finally has one of its biggest attractions back.

Slinky Dog Dash reopened Thursday, September 3, ending an unusual three-day shutdown that left Toy Story Land without its signature roller coaster.

The attraction returned for Early Theme Park Entry Thursday morning. By approximately 8:55 a.m., Slinky Dog Dash had a posted wait of around 35 minutes.

That return comes after several difficult days for the coaster. Slinky Dog Dash experienced periods of downtime on the Friday and Saturday before the extended closure. Things became much more significant when the attraction failed to operate at all on August 31.

It remained closed throughout September 1 and September 2.

Now, after three complete days without operating, Slinky Dog Dash is welcoming guests again.

Three Days of Questions Finally End

A Disney attraction temporarily going offline isn’t particularly unusual. Technical problems can happen throughout an operating day, and rides sometimes reopen relatively quickly.

Slinky Dog Dash’s situation became more noteworthy because the closure kept going.

Disney didn’t announce a reason for the shutdown or provide guests with a reopening timeline. That left visitors arriving at Hollywood Studios with little idea of whether the coaster would return during their trip.

Things became even more interesting on September 2.

During the third day of the closure, a Slinky Dog Dash vehicle was spotted stopped around the attraction’s second launch. An electrical panel near the area was also open.

Those observations raised the possibility of an electrical or ride-control problem, but Disney never confirmed that either was responsible for the shutdown.

That’s worth remembering now that the attraction has returned.

We know Slinky Dog Dash is operating again. We still don’t know exactly what kept it closed for three days.

Hollywood Studios Gets Important Capacity Back

The reopening matters beyond Toy Story Land.

Slinky Dog Dash regularly attracts some of the biggest crowds at Hollywood Studios. Its family-friendly nature also makes it an option for visitors who might skip more intense attractions such as The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

When Slinky Dog Dash disappeared, all of those potential riders had to go somewhere else.

Some remained in Toy Story Land and headed toward Toy Story Mania! or Alien Swirling Saucers.

Others could move across the park toward Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, Tower of Terror, or Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets.

That’s a difficult situation for a park that already sees substantial demand concentrated around its biggest rides.

With Slinky Dog Dash operating again, Hollywood Studios has another major attraction helping spread guests throughout the park.

Toy Story Land Has Its Headliner Back

The biggest improvement is naturally inside Toy Story Land.

For three days, the area operated without its centerpiece coaster. Guests could still experience Toy Story Mania! and Alien Swirling Saucers, but the attraction many visitors prioritize was unavailable.

That also disrupted common touring strategies.

Slinky Dog Dash can become an important Early Theme Park Entry destination because guests often hope to experience it before standby waits climb. Other visitors save the coaster for later in the evening.

The reopening brings those options back.

It doesn’t guarantee Slinky Dog Dash won’t experience additional downtime. Like any major attraction, its operating status can change.

For now, however, the three-day shutdown is over.

After an unexplained closure, a stopped ride vehicle, an open electrical panel, and several days of uncertainty, Slinky Dog Dash is once again sending guests around Toy Story Land.

And Hollywood Studios has one of its most important attractions back.
