August vacations at Walt Disney World are underway, but guests arriving this month may discover a few holes in their usual plans.
Across the property, Disney is working on projects ranging from shorter refurbishments to updates that will take considerably longer to complete. Construction has also affected how guests experience certain areas, creating a different resort lineup than visitors may remember from previous trips.
Some affected locations should return before 2026 ends. Others face a considerably longer wait.
For anyone heading to Disney World this August, here are five closures or modified experiences worth knowing about before arriving.
Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress
One of Magic Kingdom’s longtime attractions is sitting out the rest of 2026.
Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress closed on July 6, 2026, as Disney began an extensive refurbishment. The attraction isn’t expected to reopen until sometime in 2027, and Disney hasn’t announced an exact date.
The project involves much more than basic maintenance.
Disney plans to update portions of the attraction while continuing to honor its connection to Walt Disney. One of the biggest additions will greet guests before they begin the familiar journey through different generations.
A new introductory scene will feature an Audio-Animatronic figure of Walt Disney.
Until that work is finished, guests visiting Magic Kingdom this August will need to leave Carousel of Progress off their plans.
Mickey Shorts Theater Temporarily Closed
Over at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, another closure has just started.
Mickey Shorts Theater closed on August 9, 2026, temporarily removing its regular theater experience from the park.
Disney has another use planned for the location during the closure. Mickey Shorts Theater will temporarily serve as a distribution location for an exclusive Annual Passholder magnet.
Fortunately, guests aren’t facing another year-long wait here.
The theater is expected to reopen later in 2026, although Disney hasn’t announced a specific return date. Anyone visiting over the next several weeks should expect the regular experience to remain unavailable.
Meanwhile, another closure has already been in place for several months.
Big Top Souvenirs Unavailable at Magic Kingdom
Guests heading into Storybook Circus will continue to find Big Top Souvenirs closed.
The merchandise location shut its doors on February 20, 2026, and has remained unavailable throughout the spring and summer.
Disney expects Big Top Souvenirs to reopen later in 2026. However, the company hasn’t provided an exact date.
Until then, visitors won’t have access to one of Storybook Circus’ primary merchandise locations. The closure may be particularly noticeable for guests who regularly stop inside while spending time in that section of Magic Kingdom.
Elsewhere in the park, construction has affected another familiar experience differently.
Walt Disney World Railroad Continues Operating Differently
The Walt Disney World Railroad isn’t completely closed, but guests won’t get its traditional full experience this August.
The railroad has operated with a modified route involving Frontierland since 2025 as Disney continues major construction in that section of Magic Kingdom.
Those projects have affected the railroad’s normal operations, and Disney hasn’t announced when the attraction will return to its previous route.
Guests can still climb aboard the Walt Disney World Railroad during their August visit. However, anyone familiar with the attraction before construction began should expect a different experience.
With significant work continuing around Magic Kingdom, the modified operation could remain in place for some time.
And one more closure takes us beyond the theme parks entirely.
Disney’s Lake Buena Vista Golf Course
Golfers also have one fewer option at Walt Disney World this August.
Disney’s Lake Buena Vista Golf Course closed on May 4, 2026, beginning a refurbishment that has continued throughout the summer.
The course remains unavailable this month as that work moves forward.
Disney expects Lake Buena Vista Golf Course to reopen sometime in fall 2026, though a specific date hasn’t been announced. Guests hoping to play the course later this year should check its availability before finalizing their plans.
Unlike the Carousel of Progress, however, the golf course is still expected to reopen before 2026 ends.
What August Guests Should Know Before Visiting
These closures won’t affect every Disney World vacation in the same way.
Guests focused on major rides and newer attractions may barely notice some of the unavailable experiences. Longtime visitors could feel their absence more, especially if Carousel of Progress, the railroad, or Big Top Souvenirs are normally part of their itinerary.
The closures also reflect just how much work is happening around Walt Disney World right now.
Several experiences on this list should return later in 2026, while Carousel of Progress isn’t expected back until 2027. The Walt Disney World Railroad remains available, but its operations have been modified during Magic Kingdom construction.
