Walt Disney World Guests Warned of Dangerous Heat Entering Orlando
Halloween season started at Walt Disney World. The weather is not participating.
Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party opened August 7. Magic Kingdom is handing out candy, running Halloween ride overlays, and selling pumpkin-shaped everything. The Boo-To-You Parade is going. Cast members are in Halloween costumes.
Meanwhile, it is 95 degrees outside.
This is the Central Florida contradiction that catches visitors off guard every single year. Halloween in Orlando does not bring crisp air and leaves. It shows up in the back half of hurricane season, in humidity you can practically lean against, with weeks of legitimately dangerous heat still to come. September brings no relief. October is when it finally breaks.
Today makes the point clearly.
The Advisory at Disney World
A heat advisory is in effect for the Walt Disney World area today, August 11, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Per the National Weather Service in Melbourne, heat index values will reach 105 to 110 degrees across east-central Florida, including Orange and Osceola counties.
Highs land in the low- to mid-90s. Add the humidity, and the heat index climbs into advisory range through the afternoon and evening.
The details:
- When: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, August 11
- Where: All of east central Florida, Orlando included
- Heat index: Up to 110 degrees
- Severity: Moderate, with a possible threat to life or property
That last line is not filler. Heat kills more people in this country than most weather categories, and it does it quietly.
What the Weather Service Says to Do
Simple guidance. It works.
- Drink water before you feel thirsty
- Take breaks in air conditioning or shade
- Wear light, loose clothing
- Never leave kids or pets in a parked car
That first one matters most. In this heat, thirst means you are already behind. Drink on a schedule instead of on demand.
Also, free cups of ice water are available at any quick service location on the property. No reason to buy bottled water all day.
Where to Get Out of It at Disney World
Every park has indoor air conditioning, water fountains, and shade. Feeling overheated? Get inside an attraction, restaurant, or shop until you recover.
Reliable options by park:
- Magic Kingdom: Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, Hall of Presidents, Mickey’s PhilharMagic, Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor
- EPCOT: Spaceship Earth, the American Adventure, Living with the Land, The Seas with Nemo and Friends
- Hollywood Studios: Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After, Walt Disney Presents, the indoor queues at Tower of Terror and Rise of the Resistance
- Animal Kingdom: Zootopia: Better Zoogether, Conservation Station, Festival of the Lion King, indoor restaurant seating
Long indoor shows are the play today. Carousel of Progress is about 21 minutes of sitting in air conditioning, which is exactly what a body needs at 2 p.m. in August. Unfortunately, that show is closed, but the Country Bear Musical Jamboree is a great option.
It Is Not Just Today
Planning to be here this week? This matters beyond one day.
The Weather Service says hot and humid conditions run through at least Friday, with heat index values approaching advisory criteria each afternoon.
A drier air mass is cutting rain chances this week, which normally means fewer of the afternoon storms that knock the heat index down a bit. So the usual Central Florida pattern, where a 3 p.m. thunderstorm brings relief, may not happen.
The heat wave should persist into the weekend and early next week, with highs staying in the low to mid-90s and a moderate to major HeatRisk daily.
Plan Around It at Disney World
Build midday breaks in. Do not try to power through.
Worst stretch runs roughly 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Put water rides, indoor attractions, or a table service meal in that window. A long lunch in air conditioning is not a wasted hour today; it is a strategy.
Got a Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party ticket this week? That works in your favor. Party ticket holders get into Magic Kingdom at 4 p.m., so you can skip the worst of the afternoon and still get up to eight hours inside.
Going in costume? Factor the heat in. A full costume in a 110 heat index is a bad idea, and the party runs through October 31, when conditions are far kinder.
When It Actually Cools Off
Straight answer: August and September are both rough in Central Florida, and real relief usually shows up in October.
Useful to know if you are still booking a Halloween season trip. Late October party dates come with far better weather than August ones, with essentially the same event.
Today, take the advisory seriously. Overdrink water, get inside on a schedule, wear sunscreen, and actually check on the people you are traveling with.
Halloween is here. Summer is not done.
