Ahsoka Character Change Sparks Fury Online Ahead of Season 2 of ‘Star Wars’ Show

Ahsoka Tano has long stood as one of the most recognizable and evolving figures in the Star Wars galaxy, but a newly revealed collectible tied to her early years is prompting a wave of backlash from fans.

First introduced nearly two decades ago, Ahsoka Tano entered Star Wars canon as the Padawan learner to Anakin Skywalker. While her debut in Star Wars: The Clone Wars was met with mixed reactions at the time, the character’s journey across animated series and into live-action storytelling has reshaped her reputation. Today, she is widely regarded as one of the franchise’s central heroes, with a legacy that stretches across multiple eras of Star Wars storytelling.

Originally voiced by Ashley Eckstein in animated projects including Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and Tales of the Jedi, Ahsoka made the leap to live-action through Rosario Dawson. After debuting in The Mandalorian Season 2, Dawson’s version of the character continued into The Book of Boba Fett before leading her own Disney+ series under the guidance of Dave Filoni, who now serves as co-President of Lucasfilm.

With Ahsoka Season 2 expected to arrive later this year, the character is once again in focus. However, a recent Star Wars Day reveal has ignited controversy—and it centers on a redesigned take on the fan-favorite Jedi.

Hot Toys, known for producing highly detailed and screen-accurate collectibles, unveiled a new Ahsoka Tano figure inspired by her earliest appearance in The Clone Wars. The release draws heavily from her original Padawan design, complete with her initial outfit and dual lightsabers.

The figure is intended to capture a version of Ahsoka that longtime viewers will immediately recognize. However, instead of replicating the stylized animated look from the series, Hot Toys chose to present the character with a realistic aesthetic. The likeness appears to be modeled after Ariana Greenblatt, who portrayed a younger version of Ahsoka in live-action during flashback sequences in the Disney+ series.

While blending animation designs with lifelike realism is a hallmark of Hot Toys’ approach, the decision has proven divisive in this case. For many fans, the combination of Ahsoka’s early costume and a realistic depiction has raised concerns that go beyond simple artistic interpretation.

Much of the criticism surrounding the figure stems from Ahsoka’s original costume design. When the character first appeared in The Clone Wars, her outfit—which included a cropped top and short skirt—drew scrutiny from viewers who questioned its appropriateness for a young Padawan.

That discussion has followed the character for years. As Ahsoka matured within the series, Lucasfilm adjusted her appearance to better reflect her growth, introducing a more practical and age-appropriate outfit in later seasons. That updated design carried over into live-action when Ariana Greenblatt portrayed the younger version of the character.

By revisiting the earlier costume and presenting it with heightened realism—along with what some fans perceive as exaggerated physical features—the new figure has reopened that long-standing debate.

Reactions on social media have been swift and pointed. One post on X reads:

“Did nobody at Hot Toys think this through? You now have a realistic depiction of a teenage actress in a boob-tube. The Ahsoka show gave her a new outfit for THIS SPECIFIC REASON.”

Another post expanded on why this redesign is wrong:

“Breaking my social media avoidance today due to Maul spoilers to say YES. Yes yes yes yes yes. That new Hot Toys reveal is so gross. Lots of weird ethical things happening there!! If Ariana signed off on it, that may help its case, but doesn’t change the fact that her 15 year old likeness is being used on a nearly revealing body in a skimpy costume that the actress never even wore!…especially given the history of her character design and….not happy about it. And not a fan. Bad move @hottoysofficial and @Disney @Lucasfilm Licensing”

The following post echoed the above, saying:

“i’m not understanding the disconnect on this discourse. these are meant to be the same outfit from the same point in the timeline. her lekku and headpiece are exactly the same. Dave Filoni updated her look in Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi to make it more age appropriate and practical.

a child shouldn’t be on a battlefield wearing a tube top and mini skirt. her outfit should actually protect and cover her body.

Hot Toys already made the updated live action Ahsoka look too, so it doesn’t even make sense that they made this figure.

this character is 14 years old. if you’re defending this costume design or this figure’s exaggerated body you’re insane.”

The response to the figure underscores a wider conversation taking place within the Star Wars community. As the franchise continues to expand across formats—spanning animation, live-action, publishing, and merchandise—the way characters are depicted remains a topic of ongoing discussion.

Ahsoka’s journey from polarizing newcomer to one of the saga’s most celebrated figures plays a key role in that conversation. Her evolution has been carefully developed over time, and for many fans, that progression includes improvements in how the character is presented visually.

It remains to be seen whether Hot Toys will address the criticism or stand by the design. Regardless, the reaction highlights the power of fan engagement in shaping conversations around Star Wars content.

Even a single collectible can generate significant debate, particularly when it involves a character as prominent as Ahsoka Tano. As anticipation builds for her next on-screen appearance, this latest controversy serves as a reminder that in Star Wars, every creative decision—on-screen or off—can carry substantial weight.
