Every day is a great day to head to Walt Disney World, but this year December might be the best time to visit. We have the top reasons why you will want to head to Walt Disney World this December for a magical experience.
1. Decorations
We absolutely love holiday decorations and Walt Disney World brings them to a whole new level. From decorating the resorts to each of the four theme parks, the holiday spirit is alive and well. Gorgeous themed trees, beautiful Mickey wreaths and so much more can be seen throughout Disney property and it is truly a magical sight.
2. Holiday Castle Projections
This year for the first time ever, Disney is having holiday themed projections on Cinderella’s Castle. Many might remember seeing the castle in the beautiful white lights, but this year Disney is mixing it up by using amazing projection technology to project unique holiday themes onto the castle. These projections are starting as the sunsets and are changing around every 15 minutes. The clarity and the beauty of these projections can’t be seen anywhere else. It is an unbelievable experience.
3. Characters in Festival Floats
Even though characters aren’t doing typical meet and greets right now, the unique mini parades in each park are a fantastic experience. Guests will be delighted by the sight of festive flotillas at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, holiday promenades at EPCOT and merry motorcades at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Character cavalcades at Magic Kingdom Park will take on a special holiday twist, with Christmas friends on festive floats in their holiday finest. We are so glad the Main Street Philharmonic will be marching right alongside the Toy Soldiers to bring holiday cheer to everyone.

4. Weather
December is a great time to be in Walt Disney World as the weather has cooled off bringing cooler days in the parks making it perfect for the holiday celebrations. Rain slows down slightly in December coming out of the high tropical storm season of September – November. We love being in the parks during this time of year as we can cozy up in sweatshirts in the mornings and night, but enjoy the sunshine during the day. A perfect combination.
5. Limited Crowds
If you have seen pictures of past crowds during the holiday season you might question going in December. This year, however, might be the best time to go as crowds are still at a limited capacity. This means that even on busy days such as Christmas and New Year’s Eve, the crowds this year won’t be as busy as any previous year. You will have some breathing room which you might not have during a typically December trip.
6. Chef Mickey is Back
One of the most iconic meals in Walt Disney World is Chef Mickey’s at the Contemporary. Here guests are joined by the Fab 5 as they enjoy delicious food while the monorail travels by. Starting December 16th, Disney has announced that Mickey and his pals will be returning to greet guests as they eat. Although the experience will be different (more physical distancing, no buffet), we are super excited to have our favorite pals back at this iconic dining location. Guests can make reservations on the My Disney Experience website or app for a great experience.
7. EPCOT’s Festival of the Holidays
We absolutely love the festivals at EPCOT and are so excited to have the Taste of the International Festival of the Holidays this year. Holiday kitchens will return around the World Showcase promenade with favorites like American Holiday Table featuring Slow-roasted Turkey with Stuffing and Bavaria Holiday Kitchen with dishes like Cheese Fondue in a Bread Bowl. We can’t wait to get here to try all of the amazing dishes once again.
8. Disney Springs Trees
The last few years Disney Springs has had a Tree Trail that took guests through an unbelieve display of specially decorated, Disney themed trees. This year, they have spread them out throughout Disney Springs and guests can see trees throughout the dining and shopping center making it more of a scavenger hunt. This is such a fun experience that the whole family can enjoy together.
9. All the Treats
December is definitely the best time to visit when it comes to all the delicious treats. Throughout the four theme parks, guests will be able to enjoy numerous (we mean numerous) holiday themed treats. These treats look like works of art almost too beautiful to eat. In Magic Kingdom, guests can try the Twice Upon a Cupcake where a confetti Christmas treetop a vanilla cupcake with a red velvet hidden Mickey (Available at Main Street Bakery) or the Let it Snow Taco which is a big sugar cookie “taco shell” filled with salted caramel and spiced chocolate mousse (Available at Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe). Disney’s Hollywood Studios has a Frozen Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate made of frozen salted caramel hot chocolate topped with marshmallows, green sugar, and a chocolate drizzle served with a souvenir Mickey Glow (Available at PizzaRizzo, Backlot Express, ABC Commissary, and Rosie’s All–American Café). Animal Kingdom is offering a special dessert for a limited time at Satu’li Canteen from Dec 20th to Jan 2nd. This dessert is the White–Chocolate Peppermint Cream Cheese Mousse featuring a white chocolate peppermint cream cheese mousse with peppermint sauce and chocolate cookie crumbles. We know more and more will become available as the month progresses and we can’t wait to enjoy all the sugary deliciousness.
The beautiful holiday decorations, treats and celebrations help make December a great time to visit Walt Disney World. It truly takes the magic to a whole new level during this special time of year.
