We reported not long ago that Disney is testing out a new custodial system that would be used to track custodial workers via a mobile device. It would allow them to get their assignments, respond to areas in need, etc. The union for Walt Disney World’s custodial workers, Unite Here Local 362, instantly opposed this technology. They feel that this new system would prevent cast members with seniority from selecting their assignments, which has been a current workflow process within the role.
The first step in formally opposing this was to bring it to the Vice President of Magic Kingdom, Dan Cockerell. He disagreed with the complaint and does not believe there is a violation with the contract. Unite Here Local 362 lost the first round, but plan to continue the pursuit of the complaint. The next step is that a union leader, alongside a Disney executive will work together on the issue to try to come to an agreement that both side mutually accept. If cannot be done, then an arbitrator will be involved. We will keep you posted as we learn more about the developments of this issue.
