‘The Grinch’ Actor Returns for Modern Take on 2000 Classic

Every holiday season, How the Grinch Stole Christmas finds its way back into living rooms around the world. The 2000 film, starring Jim Carrey and directed by Ron Howard, has become a seasonal staple — celebrated for its larger-than-life visuals, Carrey’s chaotic performance, and the tender heart at its center courtesy of a young Taylor Momsen as Cindy Lou Who.

Now, 25 years later, Momsen is once again stepping into Whoville — but this time, she’s doing it through music. The singer and frontwoman of The Pretty Reckless has released a new version of “Where Are You Christmas?”, the ballad she first sang as a child in the film. Her latest take, however, trades orchestral sweetness for heavy guitar strings, turning the holiday classic into a grunge-inspired anthem.

Momsen’s new recording also includes her original childhood vocals from the movie, creating a “duet” that bridges her past and present. The song, originally written by Mariah Carey, James Horner, and Will Jennings, was immortalized by Faith Hill’s chart-topping single in 2000. Now, it’s being reintroduced for a new generation through Momsen’s unmistakable rock style.

The timing couldn’t be better. How the Grinch Stole Christmas continues to hold cultural sway through its Disney+ run, restored editions, and annual theater screenings, while whispers of a sequel refuse to fade. In recent interviews, Jim Carrey previously said he’d consider returning to the role if it were done using motion capture instead of prosthetics — a process he once called “excruciating.”

Momsen’s new version of “Where Are You Christmas?” appears on her band’s upcoming EP, “Taylor Momsen’s Pretty Reckless Christmas”, which is set for release on October 31. It features four original tracks and two Grinch-inspired songs, serving as both a musical reunion and a tribute to one of the most beloved holiday films ever made.
